PostPosted: Sun Apr 22, 2012 8:09 am    Post subject: VW Ratio Rockers? Or Stock? How can I tell? Reply with quote

I'm preparing to put the rest of my 1835 together today - Torquing the heads and installing the rockers on the 3-4 side. I'll be adjusting all of the valves and installing a dizzy and hopefully the rest of the external components. (and grinding out the bellhouse which scares the crap outta me Sad )

Here's my question - How do I tell if my rockers are stock or ratio? I've read through some threads and didn't find much helping me out specifically. I was once instructed to measure some point to some point, however, I do not have a measuring tool fine enough to use. I'd like to make note of this process even if I'm not going to do it at this point.

I found a couple of threads where folks posted pics of their rockers and a few gurus were able to say yay or nay. Is that possible?

I'm not concerened for any reason other than just knowing that they are/aren't ratio. They're going on regardless, I just want to know for any possible future reason.

I have a set of Sig Erson 1:5's, but they are for another build so obviously I KNOW what they are. But these are stamped VW with a few number ranges on the arms.

Anybody with info? Also the method and specs for measuring ratio for me to keep on hand?

If they have the "VW" stamping on them, then most likely you have 1:1 stock rockers. Never seen VW made ratio rockers. I have been known to be wrong once in awhile though. Laughing Think they are stock though. Also if stock length push rods work out then they are stock...if you need to cut them to length to get the geometry correct then they are ratio type.

Look at the way the pushrod cup is machined in the forging; if it is centered it is 1.1/1, if it is closer to the rockershaft it is 1.25.

Not always true. I know the scat 1.25s I got are a different forging than their 1.1s, the cup is centered on each of them. CB on the other hand uses the same forging and just moves the cup.

Edit: actually, now that I think about it, the EMPI 1.25s I had also used separate forgings. The only ones I know of that just have the cup moved are the CB's

I don't even know if the pushrods are stock! I'm simply reassembling a motor. Not buying any new parts for it.

They are definitely stamped VW, so I'm going to assume they are stock and go with that.

I'll compare them to my Sig Ersons, but who knows, they could be like EMPI with separate forgings. I'll take pics of the two and post em in a bit.

Good point cashboy; I have only ever seen the CB ones and know they are a modified stock unit. I'd forgotten about the Empi and Scat units... Embarassed Laughing

If they are genuine VW 1.1 rockers they will have a double raised hash mark on the "spine" of the rocker over the rocker shaft hole. Like this "||".

Got it. I will look for those. It's storming here so my relaxing afternoon of working on my motor will have to wait until tomorrow. We need our own shop. Sad

Here are pics compared to my Sig Ersons. I didn't see any double hash marks. Maybe I'm not looking at them right. Confused

They're in your last picture. Right behind the head of the clip.

german stock rockers, no doubt

the oil holes on rockers of more recent era, and 1.25 rockers are welded closed instead of smashed

You mean real VW rockers? Or the SCAT or EMPI variety?

Real VW, not after market. I got a bunch of stock rocker assemblys off of various engines. I'm pretty sure they are all 1.1, but you never know. If I knew what to look for I mite luck out.

yeah, I was looking for a picture of the two side by side. I understood what the post said and I'm sure its self evident if youve seen em before, but a picture is worth a thousand words.

If you just take a known 1.1 rocker and compare the other rockers to it, you'll see the difference pretty easily if you run across any 1.25's. The pushrod cup is quite noticeably closer to the rocker shaft on a 1.25 rocker.

But what if I've got all 1.25's?

No seriously kinda figured that, BUT a picture would still be nice.
