Hey Richie, I could see why she was Lowrider Magazines #1 model. She didnt look like the typical hoochie mama of the day or neither does she look like the tatted-up malflora of today. Id take her as-is and make her my #1 today. Beautifull girl!!!

LOL@tatted-up malflora.. For sure!

Ive said this was not a shop but rather one apt. bldg parking lot on 40th Place in L.A..... Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
Is it hard to believe, yes... Was there a few others like this on 40th, yes... Do I miss those days, yes... Are they ever coming back, Hell No!!!

Check out the clothes drying and the balconies and all those Vdubbs. This was not a shop, It was everyday life in the 80s. These were the heydays and they are long gone unfortunately.... Sad

What is sad is that Vdubbers of today just dont have the enthusiasm necessary to make this the great Vdubb scene we (80s kids) once made it. Exchanging pictures on the internet does not constitute a scene..Get out and drive it regularly, flog it, flaunt it, enjoy it, hang out, make friends. Just my opinion

What that ^^^^ shows is that all over the L.A. area we were all in on the craze. We ate, shit, pissed, dreamed, fantasized V-dubs like people do about I-phones and facebook today.

So one of my homies calls me up and tells me that his neighbor needs some help with a fresh pan off restoration of a 1957 Ragtop that has a drivetrain rattle after only 11miles on the restoration. So my buddys neighbor tells my friend that he wants someone that knows what they are doing and works on restored cars. So my buddy tells him about me and my many years of working on $100k+ Mercedes-Benz and how I'm also knowledgable with vintage aircooled VW's. So I really don't work on VW's only mine or good friends, cause my motivation isn't for money but for friends that appreciate my knowledge and workmanship. So I agree to help out my good friends neighbor. So I get to the neighbors house, and sure enough this VW is extremely nice (could be a magazine car) and diagnose his issue. To cut a long story short we start talking about how he got into VW's and were we grew up & he tells me he was in a lowrider VW Club in the late 70's called "Sauve" & continues to tell me that they had a recent reunion of the original 18 members and shows me an original hard plaque from the club back then. He also confirmed the cragars were the wheel of choice........Man!! I had forgotten about the VW club "Sauve" but after looking at the plaque I immediatly remembered that club as a kid at the LA Sports Arena car shows and Whittier blvd during the Lowrider era........He has some pics of the cars back then and he will take a pic of the "Sauve" plaque, so I can post them here and we can see some more evolving of the lowrider VW's of the late 70's to the 1981-1982 Latino Cal-Style.........stay tuned!!!

I was reading that the first Herbie movie was in 1968. I was around 5, 6, 7 years old when I watched those movies in the early 70s at the Sundown and Paramount drive-ins with the family. Interestingly enough it was not my inspiration for my obsession with Vdubs nor have I read it was anyone elses on here. Did i think of Herbie popping wheelies in those movies when I would see Little Dreamer and Suicide Solution popping wheelies outside of Roosevelt High School 10 years later, Yes. But interestingly enough it was never an inspiration of mine. Just thought it was wierd even though I loved the movies.

Funny you should say that J8bug. My first VW inspiration for an all original "slammed" VW was a 1963 Ragtop that a guy named Adam from La Puente busted out with around 1981 and it was a Herbie VW without the stripes & numbers.....at that time it totally reminded me when I first saw it cruising Gino's 18 & over club in Hollywood of the Herbie VW.......Adam's Ragtop was "slammed" to the floor and was all OG.....that and the fact that I saw a bunch of "chacha" girls all fine coming out of his ride and he was cool like he was pimpin!....... needless to say a couple of weeks later I was rollin in my "slammed" off white VW!!

Fast bugs with a chrome engine! Baby Boys (all my homies from back then)! 1984 Bug Jam party...was there & know Adraina (Eclipse girls) and her friend Liz with her pink bug on alloys with a chrome 1776cc I built. Older guys cruising the school in their brightly colored VW Bugs. Huntington Park H.S. it was an open campus still at that time and you could cruise Belgrave st. right through the middle of campus (now that street is blocked)........Loved it Lived it!! I was there!!

We used to be able to park on Belgrave. Belgrave cut thru the middle of campus and used to end at Miles. We used to pound Mickeys 40s on Belgrave so technically we were drinking on campus. No wonder we tested the dumbest school in LAUSD and we had to study vocabulary the first 15 minutes of every class. I loved it though. No more jumping fences Exclamation That was a fun F**%%^^G school and everyone was cool as hell!!! ( oh, and St Mathias was 2 blocks away, Crazy Very Happy )

A few 80s kids or OGs as we are reffered to, got together at the Bug-in at Irwindale today for some 80s historytelling. From left to right: Alex Arredondo from Highland Park... Alex Arredondos BadTemper II was a major inspiration for this threads existence. VWKidd from SouthEast L.A/Huntington Park, Nelson from Highland Park, J8bug from SouthCentral L.A. and Marco from Echo Park. A bigger reunion is in the plans for this years Classic.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
After that ^^ picture was taken we also caught up with another OG, Ruben Navarro. Ruben had started a club called California Style in the early 80s which ironically is the same name some people started calling the new style that was becoming all the rage back then (CalStyle). Could we have found out where the style got its name??? We'll never know for sure but It sure seems possible... Ruben was also telling us that a few years later in 1982 when he was a member of Bugs Buddies some shit went down in true L.A./SGV fashion and needing to distance himself and move on from that club he came up with a new name for his window; German Folks... I thought that was pretty cool to hear early 80s history from Ruben Navarro himself. Ruben is going to try and chime-in in the near future with more early 80s history.

Ruben mentioned that the BugsBuddies used to cut out notches on there playboy airfreshner for every chick they ???...Hey KIDD, why arent there any notches on your air freshner?? Come on playar Laughing

What-up Viiiiiic!!!Its a trip how history connects us all! Ruben Navarro and VWKidd ran in the same circle of friends (BugsBuddies) pre German Folks existence. Ruben Navarro and I ran in the same circle of party friends when he was the bodyguard for musical acts that I used to chauffer in to the Casa Camino Real that Richie Rich's Teddy Boys used to throw the parties. I could always tell Vic had ELA written all over him. It turns out he grew up a few streets (Breed St.) from one of my old highschool in Boyle Heights (Roosevelt HS) ....And kicking it with some OGs we all seem to agree that when we dissappeared from the scene in the late 80s the kids that came after us grabbed the bull by the horns and have taken this shit to the next level!!!! And as I looked around the event I saw maybe a handfull of Cal-lookers and about 3/4 of the event was full of what we used to cal "Cal Style" and those, were the sweetest f***##G cars there IMO. History is also a trip when you hear what a pioneer paid to be the first turbo car in the streets of L.A... Alex Arredondo paid $1500 to tune his turbo motor (BTII) to make it happen. $1500 in the early to mid 80s was aloooot of $$$$$$.... That amount of money bought you a clean oval rag in those days!!!. History, I knew it was there because I lived it along with the other fellas and our entire generation and it was intertwined with the 80s cruising and party scene and its alive today thanks to the younger generations that didnt let it die and a few guys like CRG, that didnt walk away from it like the rest of did Sad

Life is a trip bro, We pretty much lost contact Nelson and Alex over 20 something years ago but after locating BTII it made us all get back to doing what we did back then. These guy are the ones that got me hooked into this awesome hobby and with their help were going to have this very same car showing how it was done back in the 80`s come June. I`m sure the younger crowed won`t get it but the OGs will.

I went online to see if I can pull up some pictures of the front of the Casa Camino Real or Casa de Espana as it was first named and I found some testimonials instead. I cut and paste them so you guys can enjoy the memories.

-Hey Hugo,
Although you and I weren't friends I do remember you and now I remember Chaka. The first time I saw her was at DQ's on Soto and all I can remember is that she was amazing, anyway I'm glad there other people out there that remember those beautiful days (for a moment I thought it had all been a wonderful dream).
thanks,
Mario

-Casa Camino Real started in the early 1980s. It was so much fun it was located between Washington Blvd. and Oak Street in the city of Los Angeles CA. I grew up in that neighborhood so when i heard about it I would even walk to the Club (LOL) I have such good memories from there........If i'm not mistaken it closed early '90s.....Teddy boys, cesar deniro.....Copa dancers, boys from brazil

-Thanks for the comments M20. I live them days often in my mind and most recently I have created a catalog of all the jams Djs played back then, and let me tell you HINRG disco had and still has a unique emotional feeling you don't get in music today. Even though we may not have been friends back then... you are a new friend today.

-Many dancing floors to choose from, this was the place to be in the 80's wasn't it originally called casa de espana? and I think this building is for sale, someone should buy it and make it into a museum or a retirement home for old dj's. Disco is not dead, it is back at a different beat

-Here are some names of the Copa Dancers.......maybe missing a few others. William, Mario, Tony, Oscar, Hugo, Larry, Little Mike, Victor Hugo, Edgar
We were the s***!

Here's my testimonial: I loved the Casa from the time it opened in 1982 but it was horrible for cruising. Washington was a major fast moving street , Oak was narrow and dark, the back pkg lot was underneath the freeway and you had to go in thru the gate. You couldnt cruise the front of The Casa cause it was a deadend and there was no room. Since I lived so close me and my friends used to ride dirt bikes or beach cruisers we used to steal from USC to get there. There was a liquor store across the street with a small pkg lot but that was small to and if fights would break out there, forget about coming out of there unscathed.
Both DQs were perfect for cruising. J8Bug

So I was talking to my Homie that was part of the 80's LA VW scene about talking to some of the players from back than at Bug-In yesterday and how we were saying that we all had the cruising circuit mapped out back then.........start at Monticeto Park, Arrow Seco park, El Sereno Huntington Drive, Lincoln park, to Stadium way, Elysian Park than Sunset drop down to Beverly to the Original Tommies to Salesians "the hole" & than to Whittier to Arrys burgers all in one night and not always in that order but hitting each place............

So when I finish my 55 Vert & he finishes his 62 Ragtop we are going to retrace those routes and relive a little those fun/crazy times!!!
