I have this old large format magazine from April 1950. Can anyone tell from the image on the cover what year the beetle is? Also, it looks like there is some sort of cover on the inside of the decklid. Was this something done on early beetles?

It appears to be a VW 38, I'm sure I saw this pic in that thread somewere.
About the "cover" on the decklid, it looks airbrushed or something, look under the window, no air vents either...

Not vw38. Hinges are later than the second batch of 38's which looked more like production hinges but not quite the same.

There is also no name plate on the firewall and it has the coil on the shroud.

Here is the engine compartment of the second batch of vw38's with the rounded deck lid corners.

I agree about the airbrushing of the inside of the deck lid.

I would say it is super early though. No later than '43.

I want that floor jack. That is cool.

Must be later. The coil is not behind the fan shroud.
I´d say somewhere around 1947.
The old fan cover with the holes looks even older but for sure the car is post war for me.

Based on the engine detalis, the car is most likely a Mid-'46 car.

Did they airbrush photo's in the 1950's?

Yes, very heavily sometimes.

Yes, very heavily sometimes.

Look at any VW owners manual or Bentley manual and it was used heavily in those.

Sometimes they would add turn signals or change details to make something look up to date.

Even the '39 KDF owners manual had a lot of airbrushing/retouching. They added banana guards to the bumpers of vw38 number 6.

It looks like the tins, pulley and air cleaner are tan or some other color than black.

Yes, they will be most likely olive or grey.

It looks like the original photo was cropped at the bottom of the decklid, so an artist drew in everything above that to fit the magazine cover.

And still they do, usually to enhance a product or to compensate for poor reproduction.
I used to do a lot of retouching for newspaper ads in the 80's, which would be a somewhat comparable printing to this magazine from the 50's.
Now it's all photoshop and not as noticeable.

Actually if you look for it you'll be surprised how many ads are photoshopped. People or cars apparently situated on lake shores or mountain tops or other outstanding locales when they are really in studios. Lighting seems to be what is hardest to get right. You can see when the light is coming from one direction in the background and a different direction on the objects of the ad.

Nice observation, that looks plausible!
