|
|
Hi Again
The metal rollers that belong to the Door Holding Springs on my early 59 are worn. Are new replacements available?
Thanks _________________ 59 Karmann Ghia Cabriolet

Paul,
If you strike out finding these.... and if they're just rollers, work out the dimensions nominate the material and I can turn them up for you on my lathe.

I wish these were that easy to make. Here is what Paul is looking for:

That's the one Loren. When they are worn the door won't hold open. Looks like it may have to be specially made.

Well then, it's good that Nicholas can make them AND he is in Australia!

With a lathe and a milling machine these could be made. If you decide to have them made and need dimensions let me know. Here is another shot of the piece in question:

| Mine are worn out too. If you make them, I would be interested. |

I'm sure a number of folks would like a set or two of these in their parts bin -- I would! The problem is that often when someone proposes making a hard to find part available they are greeted with an enthusiastic response, but after going through the money and expense of actually manufacturing said part, often find a relatively small number of orders. I don't blame the maker for being frustrated and reluctant to take another risk, or the buyers who may no longer have a need or whose expectations may not be met.
I think this issue is a real obstacle to getting small, limited runs of hard to find parts for our cars.
I have never used it myself, but a number of my coworkers participate in crowd-funded projects such as those hosted on http://www.kickstarter.com/. The idea is to provide a means for interested parties to pledge some fixed dollar amount to fund a (typically small, limited run) project. The project has an agreed upon deadline and agreed upon return. If the project is successful, the pledges are invoked and the parts are sent out. If it is unsuccessful, no one pays anything. I think the site is geared heavily towards artists, though there is a pretty healthy number of craft projects too. Maybe there is another crowd-fund site better suited for this sort of thing than kickstarter.
At any rate, I for one would put up some money to get a set or two of these. |
