| thanks for all the advice so far - I agree that keeping the body on the pan is probably preferable, but to be clear, the body is coming off eventually and going on a rotisserie if that makes a difference. thanks again! |

Quick update on the progress. those "rust-free" rockers and lower rear fender panels turned out to be not clean once the paint came off and exposed the bondo. I got the door frames braced up and started taking the driver side rocker panels apart, looks like the convertible reinforcement is partially rusted and the heater channel middle panel is completely fried. atl least the inner channels appear to be salvageable. I'm going to do some exporatory surgery on the rear front panels - there is some rust through down on the rocker that I'm assuming has rusted through from the inside, so I'll expect the worst and find out what how bad once I open it up!
do I need "X" cross-bracing too or is this enough?
Here's the rust through on the lower rear quarter panel that's due for surgery...
looks like some previous repairs on the rear apron that will need some attention next.

Those rockers seem to be pretty typical. That car looked so good before you stripped it. In the end you will be glad to have it right.

that little bit of rust on the outside usually means bad things on the inside - it's interesting that the rust usually works its way from inside to out. I'd have loved to have opened it up to find light surface rust and less work ahead of me but I know in the long-run it will be worth it to get it right. |

It always amazes me at how quickly I can trash my garage though! I'll spend a couple of hours cleaning up and organizing everything but can never manage to keep it that way for long. I guess I'm good at organizing but i suck at staying organized  |
