Hello,
I bought a 73 Thing recently. I was wondering if the turn signal lever self cancels after a turn has been made. Mine does not and I was stopped by a patrolman because if it!

| Thanks! I have the stock steering wheel. The horn in my car isnt working as well. I will take the steering wheel off and take a look around. Since the lever doesnt return at all, should I be looking for anything in particular? |

Yes. With the wheel off, turn the signal on in either direction. A little whir tang should stick out. There is a piece that protrudes from the steering wheel and catches it on the way by and self cancels. Both can break off. The part in the back of the wheel is called the horn contact ring. Easily replaced. The part in the switch is part of the switch and you have to replace the whole switch.

Here's a picture of two turn switches. The one on the right is broken and will not self cancel. If you look closely at the one on the left you will see a squiggly spring attached to plastic tangs. Spring is missing on the broken one.
The lug on the steering wheel hits the white plastic lug just inboard of the spring.
The brass wiper contacts are for the horn. Both are worn pretty badly on both switches. Yes, I know one switch has 1 wiper, and the other has 2. Either part works although the angle of the handle is a bit different.

A little word of caution:
When you install the steering wheel, be sure that the turn signal switch is in its "neutral" position, so you don't break the plastic tab with the cancelling cam on the steering wheel.
