If I had to take a stab at these marks? I'm guessing quality control reference.. shift, station, worker ...etc...
Kinda makes sense if you think about its random and incoincidental ill-nature of colors, models & reguardless across years being similar and so on...

I am inclined to agree with you. Some of the numbers you see on the early splits are also on the later VW's? # 55 sure is popular, you can see it on Johnhenrys 1950 and all the way up to my Jan 58? I wonder how many "Jigs" VW had in use at the time, as these different numbers could be various inspectors putting their stamp after each car was completed in the jig assembly? _________________ 1958 Agave Beetle

Thanks Suboval. Does anyone have an idea on how many body assembly "Jigs" VW may have been using during production? I would imagine that there would be several Inspectors with thier own stamp to mark a Car? What I have found interesting in compiling the list, is that #55 was used in 1950 and 1958.... _________________ 1958 Agave Beetle

No the stamps on all the sedans.
Maybe codes to help assembly line workers put certain parts on as early as possible during initial assembly?
Take for instance 55, m code 055 is shifter lock with ignition switch. Putting the correct wiring harness during initial assembly would be MUCH easier than adding it later at the dealer.
22, or 022 is for sealed beam units, a different connection is used compared to euro bulbs, and VW sent the headlight units with no bulbs so dealers would install US products before sale.
Just plain 2, or 002 is US equipment.
Do any numbers match m codes provided on individual birth certificates? |

I wish it were that simple? My 58 has "B" and "55" but my M-codes are. 067/128/134/350. _________________ 1958 Agave Beetle

| Yea I think it must be 55, I checked the back using a mirror and it looks similar to the photos, but seems 55 more likely. Photos taken at night using a shop light thus the orange glow - actually silver. |

I posted about these body stamps over in my main thread and there were no answers..........seems on the most part these letters and numbers are still a mystery????
Left Side:
Is an upside down E
Right Side:
Is a single number 5
And the Body Serial 566889 and "European Only" Baujahr Stamp 1957
I don't have a Birth Certificate yet on the car, my educated guess is that the car is from the late May Production and Delivered sometime in early June 1957.
Sorry for my dirt I still haven't cleaned and polished under the hood yet, I'll be getting it soon!
