| I am on to the engine work now, and trying to decide what to do. I am feeling like converting to a carb will make life a lot easier in keeping the car running, the motor turns, and has fired. I am thinking about converting it to carbs, obviously some parts would have to be swaped out to mechanical ones. but what about the actual EFI swap out "procedures"? know of any literature i can look at that will give an overview of what to do exactly? Or maybe you all know what going on in this area and can offer advice. |

Is there anything wrong with the EFI? The L-jet is fairly easy to work on. _________________ 1982 Westy, 1974 412 Variant... Yes, Aircooled's are great! Oh and I do have modern computer controlled vehicles too, but I just don't care about them. |

This sounds like an oxymoron. |

| I kinda assumed the fact that it hasn't been run since the early 80's that it would be a pain in the rear to deal with, do to the sensors and such |

You could be pleasantly surprised. Fiddle with it first before converting to carbs. _________________ '73 Super Beetle w/ all the Sport Bug extras

36 wires and four sensors. Its not that hard.....you just have to read and be patient. If it was carbs and had not been run since the 80's it would be no less of a pain....fuel system rust and corrosion, ignition and fuel line issues...corrosion in the carbs, throttle rebushing, carb rebuilds etc.

Well...I will admit this....when it comes to L-jet for 412....if all of teh senors are there and in good shape....thats one very positive thing.
However, if trunking, air connector pipes, the air cleaner and lots of other plastic goodies are missing or broken....this could be a big hassle. The ancillary parts for 412 L-jet are much much harder to find and non similar to a bus in some cases. look all of this over carefully and take some picstures. Ray |

Greetings! A few thoughts about this subject. First of all, is your car a 4-door or squareback? I am assuming it's a squareback by your name.
I am the process of converting my 1974 VW 412 4-door from a set of empi 34mm dual carbs I bought from cip1 back to the original L-Jet fuel injection (thus I have a set for sale if anyone is interested). Why am I doing this? Two main reasons: One is I want to restore it to its original condition, Two, I am not carburator savy, and I couldn't get them to work correctly (again, I'm sure it was me and not the carbs). You may be thinking about a single carb. If so, I'm 99% sure you will have to cut a hole in your engine cover. The same is true for a 4-door - in which case, you will need to cut a hole in the firewall (sigh). I don't know about dual carbs in the squareback fitting.
If you need parts for your 412, I have a 1974 VW 412 Squareback that I am parting out. I had it 90% restored when a major rust issue occured, So I decided to part it out rather than spending a LOT of money to fix the issue. Instead, I am going to use the money to finish my 4-door (Blueberry),m as well as my 1969 VW 411 (YES, REALLY, A 1969!!!, date of production was August of 1968). I should start a thread of its restoration progress. My dream is to show the two at cars as a "begining and end" sort of presentation at car shows.
Anyway, good luck! and let me know if you need parts.
By the way, if I broke any rules by stating I have parts for sale, I apologize.
SMILES
