I wouldnt use Loctite. It is not necessary or recommended. You do not need it if your parts are functioning and not wore out, proper suspension height, along with proper torque at the nut. The nut will keep itself on; the pin is a "just in case" precaution measure. The only time my nuts kept coming loose is when my axles were beating the splines of my drums out and the nuts would loosen as a result. Incorrect or very worn splines on drums also lead to this.

Magellan= is your car slammed or mild?

It was a very low GTI- I also agree with you that new parts will also most likely fix this issue properly.

I used loctite, the pins are not shearing but they keep coming loose. I'm going to lift the front and rear this weekend and see if it is less problematic. The drums I used are OE German(I've used aftermarket parts and found that used German is way better than the aftermarket crap made now a days) The axles are most likely the original axles from 66. I resealed the tranny on this one and it looked worn inside, but shifts fine. I am planning on replacing the tranny next year with a rebuilt freeway flier, might as well throw all new axles and what not in at the same time.

Also, if the spacer behind the axle bearing is worn down itll cause it to come loose. Im putting a new one in mine now.

Here is the height the bug will be at for this summer. The axle splines are not looking so hot. One of the bearings is already a little rough from the axle angle not giving it lubrication. Next year i hope to throw in a new tranny, axles, and whatever else it needs, then drop it a little lower(not as low as it was, but lower than it is now). Here is a link to the build thread. It is on our local's Montana site:

dude, it looks a lot better now! what, lower it again...after you do all that future work? seriously?? You are seeing SOME of the results of driving the rear low. I am low and dont have those issues...and my car handles and doesnt eat tires, because I did it correct. If you want to go real low and have the parts last= box raise 2-3". No way around it.

Not all bugs are the same. I know guys that drive at 2 outer splines and never seem to have anything bad happen. I, on the other hand- busted all types of things every time I tried over the years- buses and bugs.

There is a compromise I had to learn over the years= there is the looking cool factor, then there is the handling/safety/parts lasting factor. You have to give up a little of the looks to have the car last and perform safely. Replace your worn parts and leave it slightly higher like it is now. You will be glad you did.

I bet the inner spacer is missing all together.

I wans't going to go as low as I had it. I went 2 outer splines down. I brought it back up two now. I was going to try one outer down. How much do the inter and outer splines move it?

1 outer is perfect. It is about 2.5" but suspensions vary. I do a combo of inners and outers, combined with a U style drop plate, along with adjustable plate, KYB gr2, and a CB compensator. It handles like it never used to. I would never go back to just using solo stock plates.

I dont mess with splines anymore either. What I recommend, is getting some Z style drop extension plates--the 2.5" ones. You dont want more than this. All you do is set them at the stock location- proper toe and ride are there. It decambers the rear and your tires last, and have good handling. Any more than that and your parts/handling/comfort/ suffer.

Chalk me up as another guy who stripped 4 german drums until I changed the axle. Axle splines wear out too!

Are these the drop plates you are talking about?

I have a 63 rag it was slammed ..... The back was so low that it kicked the tire out at the bottom......I eat up drums left and right.... I realized that there was so much pressure on the axles at the drums due to the severe angle .... My axle nuts kept loosening up.... So I raised the rear 3 inches and haven't had anymore problems
