Once engine is out it is easy.

Not to knock either of you guys, but there are lots of items like this that must be replaced so as to have a reliable VW. Would be good to list items here you have replaced.....

If the gear oil is coming out from between the bell housing and engine case it would be the outputshaft seal.

1. drop engine, remove throw out bearing
2. remove oil seal
3. remove any rust on output shaft where seal rides
4. install seal (ive used a long pipe to tap seal in place)

remember to lube lip of seal before installation

If that pic is of actual gear oil I would change the oil in the trans and the reduction boxes as well!!!

Here is a list of things I do before any road trip:

Bleed/adjust brakes
Lube front end, tie rods, king pins
Adjust link pins
pack front bearings
inspect tires inflate to correct pressure
Change engine/trans/rgb oil
tune up (verify total advance with timing gun VERY IMPORTANT!!!!)
adjust valves (especially on new engine)

looks like he put a new battery, hope he put new cables as well.

Better put some heater tubes between the shroud and the heater boxes or he will burn up his heads in no time!!!!

After looking more closely at the pics it doesnt look like he changed the axle boots. Leak might be easier than originally thought.

Too bad he is missing the vin tag in the engine compartment.

I'd agree. He's replaced a lot of things since switching all the gear from the Mexipanel to this bus while he was in Midland last year. The only mileage it's seen since, is the trip from there to here, a few hundred miles, then it was parked at my house for right at 11 months. That being said, I've no idea what specifically he changed, but I do know that he had some transmission/rgb work done while in Midland due to the spring plate being welded to the rgb. Again, I've no idea the specific scope of work done. When we put the new engine in it earlier this week, there wasn't any obvious sign of the seal leaking at that point.

He did hook the heater boxes to the shroud, but it was after the pics were taken. He also mentioned having replaced the boots, again while up in Midland.

He'll chime in I'm sure with any specifics.

I most assuredly don't take offense to constructive criticism. I'm not an expert, nor do I claim to be in the hemisphere with being an expert. I do appreciate your civility. Others on here seem to make themselves feel better about themselves by making others feel stupid. There are many things I don't know, but am willing to learn. Again, thank you for the constructive advice in a helpful manner.

Hey everyone. Thanks for the answers.

Looks like the output shaft seal. It was changed year ago and it was driven just 400 miles so it didn't came to my mind it should've been replaced.

We have a winner!

That's exactly what it was. We managed to locate one locally on Sunday via a local enthusiast that had one stashed. Peter installed it, did a few others things, and re-departed on his journey this morning.

He added some "bling" to his bus last night, but I'll let him post up pics of his ... enhancements. His bus is now as cool as the Coors Light train. Wink

Hello. So the bus runs again. The seal on the main output shaft was shot, but as John said, we were able to get one locally. I left Johns house this morning and I am heading north more or less.

I am about 25 miles from Austin. Text me at 415.480.4150 if you wanna me me over dinner or beer. If I won't receive any response, I will probably continue north towards Dallas / ft. Worth.

Everything rung good so far. I have oil leak from fuel pump, but nothing too bad. And I already revealed it once. Strange.

Yesterday I drilled back holes for VW emblem on the front that someone welded up. And I sprayed the front with ....... Wait for it..... Silver and gold Smile

Its amazing. Will post pictures later!

Question: how much gas can I put to the tank if I want to avoid reaching the neck base? My gas tank leaks where the neck is welded to the tank itself so I can't fill the tank up. I am wondering if someone had similar problem.

If it got shot within 400 miles I sure hope the pilot bearing is not the culprit. Zozo is a champ.

The seal that was shot was an odd bird. It was only about 3/16" deep, and was very soft. I remarked that it was the right ID and OD, but other than that, it wasn't correct. I'm wondering if maybe the bad one didn't come from a bearing and seal supplier and was selected for it's ID/OD and not the specific application.

That being said, I hope you're right. Petr put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into that bus, I'd sure like to see him get lots of enjoyment miles out of it before he has to contend with any more problems.

I have a dummy shaft I stick into the gland nut and feel. I always look in there and maybe wipe it and add a daub of grease and make sure the felt isn't gritty or gone. It has to be pretty wiped out to cause a whip.

The story continues.

Just couple miles before Austin, my starter stopped working. Not the started itself but something electrical. I drove to Austin and I stopped by Austin Vee Dub store and shop. I kept the bus running so I don't have to push start it.
They were almost closing so they were not very friendly Smile
But I bought few parts. Wiper blades, plastic spacer that goes under fuel pump (I think my engine is leaking oil thru there), Allen bit for transmission oil change and air filter. I was thinking buying repro ignition switch but I was not sure whats the problem so I did not.

Then I drove to Kenny Hill's autowerks. I met Kenny himself. Nice guy, showed me his shop and we talked for few minutes.

Then I drove to Walmart. I bought crimping tool and some 10 gauge terminals and I was trying to figure out the problem with the starter. I worked on it last night and todays morning. No permanent succes. I had the ignition switch and headlight switch out like 10 times. I first thought it was bad connection in terminal somewhere. I think the problem is that the hot wire that brings power to the front is shot somewhere and has too high resistance. 2 times out of hundred tries it worked. So I have little hack in the engine compartment for the time being to start the car.

Last night I spent at the Walmart parking lot. No problems.

After morning electrical excersise I drove to see downtown. I parked downhill Smile
Capitol and the Austin downtown is nice. Then I wanted to drive to gas station. Before I got there, I run out of gas. Luckily I had 2 gallons extra with me. But the fuel filter was all clogged up from the dirt at the bottom of the tank. So I drove to autozone to get new filter. I installed it immediately.

Then I drove to meet Conrad (dualport). On the way to his house the engine died. No green light, nothing. Just died. So I pulled over to the shoulder, waited 1 minuted, checked the engine and started again. It worked. I don't what it was. Maybe dirt in the fuel pump or something.

I got to Conrad's around 7 pm. Conrad is cool guy. His 21 window looks amazing. I bought new gas tank from him for $100 and he gave me some cool parts that I will use down the road. I wanna install the tank as soon as I can so I can fill it up every time on the gas station and not worry about the leak.

He also gave me cool shirt! And lot of advice. Nice guy, meet him Smile

After I left Conrad, I head north. I am gonna sleep now. I am at RV camp near Belton TX.

I will be heading north probably Dallas / ft. Worth area. If you wanna grab a beer and you are somewhere close to my route, send me a message or post here.

Sucks that these things keep popping up but you're getting that bus dialed. Next time you need a part chime in hear first to ask about fair market value.

The new episode of Peter and the Bus is here. This week he his fuel gauge finally works, he gets checked by Texas Sheriff and the first people he talks to in Oklahoma are two dirty homeless bums Smile don't switch to another channel (I mean thread)

RV camp was fucking expensive. I guess I am dumb and I didn't understand the price list. It was like 34 bucks and I didn't even used the power. I haggled with the fat lady in the office and she gave $4 discount. Great.... Maybe not Smile

But everything bad is good for something else. On the way to forth worth, I stopped at some lake (don't remember the name) and took a swim. There were bunch of kids from Belton I guess and one of the girls was celebrating 21st birthday. Nice kids, they liked my bus. When I was leaving, one of them asked how much I paid for it. I replied $1600 which was what I paid initially in Mexico for the panel. He replied "dude, you got ripped of". So I laughed and left Smile

When I came to fort worth, I parked in the sun dance square area. I walked around the downtown and it's really nice city.

I got there pretty late so I thought I can go visit some local club/pub to see what it's like. Not a good idea. There was a guy worked as the club promoter. He liked that I was from Europe I guess and kept giving me shots of whiskey.
I didn't handled that very well and got pretty drunk. But not drunk enough to get back to my bus. Unfortunately couple of fort worth wannabe cops on bicycles were interested in my plans for the night. I told them like 10 times that I am not going to drive drunk (which I NEVER do). One of them was especially annoying. They let me go my way after 20 minutes.

I came to my bus and fell asleep. When I woke up the next day, I was still little drunk. So I slept one more hour. Then I drove to Walmart to get something to eat. Then I slept one another hour. Then I noticed Steve (who runs the Texas Classic show) texted me and invited me for lunch.

I met him for lunch but I was not feeling well. But it was getting better.

After the lunch we went together to meet his friend Dennis. At Dennis' place we pulled the engine out of my bus and installed the tank I bought from Conrad. And my fuel gauge finally works. No more running out of gas! Yaaay.

Both Steve and Dennis are awesome guys! It was pleasure to meet them. Steve booked me a hotel room for the night. That was amazing! Million thanks goes to Steve. Dennis recommended me weatherstripping for my rattling cargo door. I bought couple of rolls in home depot and I can't be happier.

On Friday I visited Dennis and Steve one more time and then left the city.
But before I left I briefly visited Stockyards. There was Harley meetup there. Not my Cup of tea.

I decided to skip Dallas. Sorry all the great people of Dallas. I will visit one day, I promise!

I decided to drive towards Oklahoma. There was pretty big storm up north. The wind was so strong I had to pull over and wait until next day.

I pulled over at city called Pilot Point which was really confusing. I though it was a truck stop when I saw the sign.

I was getting ready for the night in front of Dollar Genaral when sheriff came to visit me. He wasn't rude or anything. I told him I pulled over cause the wind and asked him if it is legal to be here. He said no problem. He just noticed car that "doesn't belong here" (his words) so he came to check it out. He checked my ID and left.

In the morning I hit the road again. I finally made it to Oklahoma around noon today (Saturday). I haven't seen one yard sale in Texas and there is one every two miles or so in Oklahoma. Weird. I also got funny haircut here.

I will be heading north I think

Also i apologize for the lack of pictures. I can't post them from my iPad. But I promise I will post them all at once when I fire up my laptop.
