PostPosted: Sat Apr 28, 2012 2:57 pm    Post subject: J-tube Question or 2 Reply with quote

I just received my trimil 1-1/2" exhaust and j-tubes I ordered from so cal.

When I was shopping for j-tubes I noticed that nobody lists the size of the tubing. I got a ceramic coated exhaust so I thought I would get the trimil ceramic coated j-tubes from sol cal since they all appear to be the same.

The j-tubes I got are definitely 1-3/8". Is everyone running a 1-1/2" header using 1-3/8" j-tubes? This seems crazy to me.

Now that I look closely, the ones from CB:

http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=382

look like they narrow towards the end, where the ones I have and most others are straight. This leads me to believe they are 1-1/2". Can anyone confirm this?

lol, I have yet to receive my last order from CB and it looks like I will be placing yet another.

http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Heater-Box-Replacement-Pipes-J-pipes-Type-1-p/2510-2510-13.htm

These are listed as 1 3/8".

But we also have 1 3/8", 1 1/2", and 1 5/8" J-Pipes, but these are only available in Stainless Steel.

It is true you want the J-pipes to match the header you are using. There are a decent # of 1 1/2" headers out there that don't have the proper J-pipes with them. This creates the "Half-Header" syndrome, more common than many realize.

I think this is what I started to realize and wanted to see if it was common.

I did see the CSP ones and yours as well John, but seems like there should be something between the incorrect $18 pos empis and the correct $90 SS ones you guys offer.

It is obviously too much to expect companies making 1-1/2" headers to make j-tubes the same size (empi excluded, thats exactly what I expect from them).... Rolling Eyes

A J-tube normally replaces the heater box. If you are not using heater boxes there is no need to have a header that can connect to them.
I do not know why the are not all 1 3/8, but sure enough some are 1 1/2

Most highperformce headers do not use j-tubes, the bends and lengths can be made nicer that way

I have no intention of ever using heater boxes.

I got a header that is setup for heater boxes because I prefer the location of the #1 & 3 exhaust compared to the non-heater box header (trimil bobtail going into a baja). Keeping the hot pipes down low and not right next to the intakes. This makes sense to me.

$90/pr is CHEAP if you look at what goes into them.

Vntage speed does make a great quality product! I got my system inlcuding j pipes from John earlier this year.

I had mine coated so if your muffler is already coated you can get the j pipes to match. I used jet hot coating.

I do but I am not so good at welding.

Not saying $90 is unreasonable I just think there should be a simple steel set of 1-1/2" j-tubes maybe around $40-50. If the 1-3/8" go for $18 the 1/8" larger tubing should only be a little more in production cost.

The fine print 2-3 week shipping time is slightly unreasonable but I'm in no hurry and will order a pair right now.

John do you have someone to ceramic coat them for me? What is the additional cost and total receivng time for me?--If need be we can move this private.

there IS, the improperly made (empi?) ones are 1 1/2 flared down to 1 3/8 at the end.
If you learn how to weld tube together...........

It's Supply/Demand. The @# of people that want larger than 1 3/8" are like 3% of the market. So they take a lot of extra work, to then collect dust on the shelf. Unfortunate, but the way it is.

Seriously for this it would take several hours of learning time and then real piece welding.

Not in a hurry but not worth it for me to wait on my own stoopit ass to learn to be a competent welder.

If I get the SS ones I guess there is no real need to coat them, stainless right......?

Or I can just bbq paint them black. I only got ceramic coated because my baja has chrome rims and chrome window trim and the ass end looked a little blah before so I got a shinny exhaust. The j-tube color won't really matter for the look I am after.

3%......? This is what really makes me believe what you said earlier about a bunch of folks running a half header. There are tons of 1-1/2" headers avail for sale and in use. There should be just as many 1-1/2" j-tubes or heater boxes in use.

50% of folks are running the WRONG header IMO
1 1/2 headers that connect to the heater-boxes are relatively rare, and they SHOULD be rare, only a few companies like CSP make such things, and if they knew more about exhaust tuning I bet they would not make them at all

I'm guessing on the "3%".

But we have done a lot of surveys of customers, and it's quite amazing. Most of the VWs being used, believe it or not, are DAILY DRIVERS. By FAR.

The real die-hard enthusiasts that tend to read and post on the Samba are much more into it than the average VW owner. That's why my comment is what it is. There are a lot of those 1 1/2" headers out there, but the average VW owner never ever goes to a swap meet or show, the VW is just something they drive. And when it breaks they get parts for it.

And for those guys, 1 3/8" is the proper tube.

My long winded point is the number of guys really USING a 1 1/2" header are very small; ie: 2-3% when you look at the big picture. It seems like that is a crazy low #, but we have seen the data to prove it, at least from what we have collected.

All good information and thanks.

I just think that if you choose a 40+ year old car as a daily dirver you should be a little more into it and its internal workings than you are with your Hyundai Accent.

I guess I thought most acVW drivers were enthusiasts and not just using a car. I always expect too much from people.

Again a 1-1/2" header doesn't need to be designed to connect to heater boxes but I don't think running them next to the intakes is a good idea either and given a choice between the 2, I choose to run them down low where they were originally designed to.

Now if other 1-1/2" headers run the #1 & 3 cylinders' exhaust down low, even if its different from stock side to side it would be fine but the fact that they locate in the same place as the heater boxes is a good thing. Then stock(ish) tin can be used, the way they were originally designed to.
