I'm sure you'll find the right buyer. _________________ http://restoringferris.blogspot.com/

price isnt that bad lads...
looking at the prices here on the Samba... yeah it maybe a few dollars over... BUT, look at the shit thats also on here...
they have nothing on what this car has.
id love to hit it with some buffing compound & give it a clean up... would come up a treat i believe.
surprising what people say when they have no intention of buying
if someone has the hard earned... im very sure bob would chat with them about price _________________

Shaven, the price isn't necessarily that bad but it sounds like a case of maybe a $4500 Squareback with $3k worth of doo-dads and accessories. And if the OP only wants the car and doesn't want the accessories, then what's the point?
And think about this: it sounds like that car had its pans replaced in the late '90s, you know....before Klassic Fab and them started making those repops. Isn't there a good chance that they're those...um...fiberglass pans?
For arguments sake let's say that they are fiberglass. So then now you've got a once beautiful car past its prime with fiberglass pans, a worn paint job that's only 15 yrs. old, a busted center console, a radio it looks like someone stepped on, an interior you can only see in pictures from who knows when and which looks like the seller's 5 yr. old tore it up, an engine you can only hear run over the phone unless you live within a few hours driving, ONE windshield wiper, some broken seals, a rebuilt engine with who knows how many miles on it, a disconnected horn even though it's been a driver for the last few years (?!?!), and a disconnected interior light (why?) according to the seller's posts, the best pictures of the car are labelled "old" and were requested by the buyer from another poster (why didn't he have his own?) etc.
Something's not right here!
OP, I'm not trying to be a d**k even if I sound like one.I'm just saying be careful. There's still got to be more than meets the eye/ear on this one! I've been burned before with a long-distance buy. It's easier to make peace with crap you can see and can decide to accept or not than crap you get delivered to you on a trailer after spending $1200 getting it shipped to you and you can't do anything about it!
I'm also not saying the seller's being dishonest. But I've definitely met sellers who are 100% convinced they're selling gold when it's clear to everyone else that they're selling tin foil.
Plus, OP, it seems like you're not only dealing with the person selling the car but also his family and they're all attached to the car. That's not a criticism of the seller but a heads up that you're dealing with more than one person when it comes to striking a deal.
Though maybe I'm an old-fashioned guy who's used to striking a deal with a dude in his garage and his wife pops in to say "you're going to give my husband $3k for that POS? I would have given it to you for free just to get it out of here." |

Thanks for the passionate response Rocket! I don't know if I agree with everything you said but I appreciate the heads up.
Very astute about the pans too because when I talked to the seller he said it has the fiberglass floor pans. Does that change anyone's opinion on things?
And I see what you mean about getting burned on a long distance sale but I'm not in the habit of parting with my $$ unless I'm really really certain about something. My life doesn't depend on getting this particular car but if it works out, I'll be happy. If not, I'm sure I'll be happy about whatever one does finally work out. If I had $18k, I could just get this one which looks like it'd be like starting over with a brand new car!

...that car has its own set of issues. It's on eBay and the highest bid (last I checked) was $11k. That price sounds a lot more realistic. The reserve is higher than that so it probably won't sell on eBay.
Bob's car has issues but the only way to know for sure and end the speculation is to pay the man (Everett) to go check it out for you. Who knows, maybe the car is a little better (or worse) in person. You would be hard pressed to find a better volunteer to take a look though. _________________ http://restoringferris.blogspot.com/

I've already talked to Everett about going to see it so that's underway. I only added the new info and question since someone else was speculating about the pans.
I couldn't find that other car on eBay, only this one:

It'll be interesting to hear an opinion after a visit... _________________ http://restoringferris.blogspot.com/

Is it driving you nuts that he hasn't bought a car?
...as far as the car in Colombia: I work in global logistics and I can tell you that your money may go in and the car may not come out without additional 'fees'. Next to Brazil, Colombia is a bitch to import/export goods through.
There was a car late last year in Washington that I kick myself for not buying...but another one will come up-they always do! _________________ http://restoringferris.blogspot.com/

I've seen the 68 in IL (it's local) and it's not only got way ugly paint but the interior is a mess. I'd like to know where he's buying rocker channels for $80? _________________ http://restoringferris.blogspot.com/

I have been looking at the ads but thanks for bringing them back to my attention. A number of those cars are just a bit too customized for my taste like the Illinois one with the green body and white roof and the slammed one.
All told, this one is looking pretty good to me and is only a 4hr drive away in terms of looking at it.

I think I passed it by when I saw the $8000 asking price, the cal-look rubber on most of the windows, the leaky heater boxes, the loose steering box, the dash that needs replacement, and the carpet he said would need to be replaced. That's a lot of work to have to do on an $8000 car, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to talk to him. |

Most of that stuff is relatively minor. The steering box is likely an adjustment that is done in an hour or two. His listing says he has a dash (they're easier to replace when the windshield is out-one reason it might not be done) and carpet is easy. Beats the hell out of what most of us are doing-complete rebuilds. _________________ http://restoringferris.blogspot.com/

Yeah, but for $8K all this easy little stuff should already be done. Plus, it should have the correct functioning fuel system. Just my 2c. _________________ Give A Pal a Hand!

That's the damn annoying thing about pricing....of course for $8k who wants to have to do annoying stuff like replace a dash, un-Cal-look the windows, replace carpets, etc? That's the kind of stuff I guess most of us wouldn't mind doing to a much cheaper car but for $8k don't you just want to be able to drive without having to do anything other than a tune up for a few months?
In a perfect world, the seller of a car like that would say $5k or $6k firm and the deal would be done. |

Speaking of which... I've had this damn thing on my "watched ads" list forever- wish I could rescue it but stuff keeps coming up. I'll bet this thing could be fixed fairly easily if you're handy with D-Jet. Sounds like a motivated seller, too.
