I'll try this question here, as I got no responses on that other forum. If anyone has a 519 PreA front mount lying around, and can find it, I would appreciate knowing the overall thickness to outside of metal. I am trying to restore mine, and one end(top or bottom) is 21mm and the other is 23mm. Trying to find out if it was made that way.
Thanks - Phil Planck |

If you are talking about the round rubber mount that fits over the nose of the transmission and into a receiver in the body, then yes, it is tapered. I don't have one handy, but I did help with restoration of a '53 including the transmission.

| No, I am referring to the mount that bolts to the transmission and body. |

Is it a rubber mount between two plates, sort of rectangular? I don't have a picture of one of those. The rubber between the two plates would be of uniform thickness, and not tapered.
These are only on very early cars, so there is not a lot of experience about theses.

when you are posting about a Pre-A you should specify the year and vin/trans serial numbers if possible. There were numerous changes between 1950 and 1955. Many of them relate to the transmission and the mounting arrangement.

Yes, that is the part. I did not realize that Stoddard carried it. I got one from International Mercantile about 8 years ago that looks just like that. The problem is that with the 4 added through bolts, a lot of transaxle noise gets transmitted to the body. I am trying to repair my old original one wiith Flexane, a porable urethane, per a tip from another 356 Pre
A owner who had success doing that. I have made the molds, with one being 2mm wider than the other because that is how my old one measured before I took it apart. Also, crawling under a measuring the International Mercatile one on my car shows that is also is about 2mm variation. Hard to get a good measurement on the car, but it definitely is tapered. So, before I pour, I was just trying to find out if the original mount had parallel sides or were they slightly tapered.

I rebuild/restore these 519 transmissions and had the same problem finding the mount WITHOUT the bolts going through it.
By doing this, you are defeating the purpose of the rubber mount. What I started doing when I realized that they were not
available anymore, I've manage to collect about 6 of them in NOS condition. Be ready to pay though as I've paid as much
as $975 a piece for them when I find them......Cheers. Mr. Okrasa _________________ 1950 Split Window 356 Coupe / #5369 / Adria Blue Metallic

Mr. Okrasa
So, how about measuring the overall thickness of your 6 mounts a reporting back the results?
Thanks |

If believe your best resource is Mr Okrasa as he has NOS ones. Mine is used, so it has likely 'settled' during the years. But if you would like to compare notes, I can measure mine next time I'm in the garage.

Since I have not gotten any info I need from Mr. Okrasa, I sure could use your measurements.
Thanks |

I've been following this thread but dont have time to go to my warehouse and take the necessary measurements of the mount as I have purchased another home
and trying to get that handled first. I promise the first chance I get, I will take the measurements and post. Cheers. Mr. Okrasa _________________ 1950 Split Window 356 Coupe / #5369 / Adria Blue Metallic

| I finally have one data point from a NOS mount. 23 - 23.4mm,, and apparently parallel plates. |

An update. I made a new front mount based on a tip from a member of the 356 Registry, who confirmed the original thickness. Using Flexane and their related primers, I made 2 molds and poured my own urethane mounts. I let them cure for the recommended 7 days and reinstalled the transaxle, along with a new rubber nose piece that goes in front of the mount, and new rear mounts. Test drive was good and bad news. Good news is that it is quieter. Bad news is that between the new mount and rubber nose piece, the trans sits a little further rearward which has resulted in popping out of first gear. I had this problem years ago, and the only way I could fix it was to bend(straighten) a bent ball stud on the monkey motion hinged link. So out came the hinged link, and over 35,000 miles it had rebent(soft casting or forging) so I straightend it back out and bent the other ball stud in the direction favoring more rearward movement and now it seems to be staying in gear.
Unfortunately, I had planned to drive the 55 coupe to the ECH, which I had registered for BTFC(before the forum change), but 3 straight days of hard, much needed rain in northern MI eliminated all of my sorting out time. Besides the new trans mounts, I did 4 other major repair projects and was reluctant to go on a 10 day, 2000 mile road trip without further sorting out and being confident in the repairs.
So, I am sitting in a motel in Batavia, NY with a modern crossover in the parking lot. Ah, but the A/C and satellite radio was nice to have today.
