So figured I start a build thread on my engine rebuild for my 54 ragtop...
I have contracted the services of the best in the biz, Mr. Okrasa himself Joe Ruiz. What we plan to do is build a 1300 stroker engine comprised of a Wolfsburg West Okrasa kit along with Joe's 69.5mm counterweighted, balanced and hardened 8 dowell stroker crankshaft and performance camshaft.
I've chose to have Joe perform the gold chem treatment on the case along with having him rework the Wolfsburg West heads to make them function as they should.
Here you can see Joe getting delivery of the Wolfsburg West heads.

Steven-
May I ask what you're going to have done to your heads? Are you going to just have the ports cleaned up, or are you going for "the works" (reshaped chambers, beehive springs, titanium retainers, etc.)?
Cheers,

The purpose of these photos is to show where there needs to be additional welding/machinework done to
the W.West dualport 36hp head before it is installed out of the box. The aluminum shrank when it cooled
when the head was cast, thus reducing this important sealing area for the liner.

| are all the WW heads like this? If a pair were not welded & surfaced, and merely bolted on out of the box, would there soon be engine trouble? |

There have been issues with the WW heads in the past but from a previous topic on the subject WW seem to be pleased to replace any head seen to be defective: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=402541
I'm not sure what purpose it will serve to get into another p***ing match on the subject especially here, a topic to illustrate Steve G engine build for his '54 ragtop.
For that reason I've taken the unusual step of setting up a feedback thread on these repro Wolfsburg West twin port heads. If you have personal experience of these repro heads, please contribute to this new topic: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5953218 . They, I believe, have sold very well so there should be enough information and feedback from actual users to come to a reliable conclusion. _________________ John.

Hello-
Great looking badge! Is it original or a repro?
Cheers,

This week the engine case got finished getting the chem dye penetrant treatment Also Mr. Okrasa has recieved the heads back from Clyde Berg after the welding had been done and I have attached some after pictures so you can see the difference of the extra surface area where the liner seats against the cylinder head now. I also got my OT pulley in the mail just the other day so I figured I toss a few pictures of it up as well.
Thanks Joe for all the updates and pics!

Here is a tough little piece to find... 54-55 generator pulley along with correct hub, washers (thick/thin) & big nut. I got lucky as the pulley is a NOS piece.
I dropped by to visit Joe this past Tuesday and was surprised to find my long block practically all done. I should have some more progress photos soon, until than here's something for your viewing pleasure!

Joe sent me these awesome update photos last night of the long block build. I am VERY impressed with the build and progress. Joe used his own Mr.Okrasa 69.5mm counterweighted, balanced, hardend, 8 dowell stroker crankshaft with nitrided journals and performance grind 36hp camshaft in the build. It's all begining to take form now!

Are those the welded cranks that DPR makes out of a stock crank? They always balance and run nice, the work is top shelf. I've never had a problem with any DPR welded stroker crank. _________________ 30 years experience in the sales of new and used auto parts!

Hello-
I seem to remember that Mr. O' sand seals his cases. Are you going to do this with yours?

I'll have to ask Joe the next time I see him unless he runs by this thread and decides to chime in, but I'm pretty sure it's not (I could be wrong however)! _________________ ~Steven G.~
