Ugh, I was just informed that the kids have a game on Sat. so I am out for this trip. Have fun and take pix.

According to the website that was updated today Usal is still closed http://www.co.mendocino.ca.us/dot/roadClosures.htm

I wonder how this will affect use in the future? http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=%2Fc%2Fa%2F2012%2F04%2F27%2FBA731O8K4H.DTL

Looks like Usal is a no go this weekend. Lance can't make it either, so we will need to reschedule this one.

Jon, be sure to keep us posted with any Big Sur updates you've got for the weekend of May 19/20.

I have an email out to GoWesty asking if they want to do Big Sur on June 2. They mentioned at SyncroFest that they would like to join the Lost Burritos for a campout on upper Pruitt/Plaskett Ridge..

I want to skip memorial weekend.

I am open to doing May 19th if people here like that date.

please give your preference for our next Big Sur Get Together.

Big Sur May 19, or
Big Sur June 2

Looking forward to camping with you all

If 2wd friendly I'd go on June 2nd. Our big ten day trip to seatle starts 19th and ends memorial day...

I heard back form the GoWesty crew it turns out their calendar is jammed, and they wont be able to join us.

Im still down with going June 2 myself.

so far, Kuleinc, Texxxxx, and myself.. for June 2

Im interested in 2wd friendly exploration of the South Coast Ridge road, a graded Forest Road, accessed from Nacimiento Fergusson, which is paved.

for those of you who have considered joining in the past, and wondered about 2wd compatibility, come explore that aspect of Free camping in Big Sur

please post if you can make it on June 2.

The meeting place would be at the Base of Nacimiento Fergusson Road.

Meet 100 yards up Nacimiento Fergusson from the Coast Highway where there is a long pullout with a view of the ocean.

Nacimiento Fergusson turn off from Coast Highway 1, is just a few hundred feet south of Kirk Creek Campground.

The GPs coordinates are 35•59'19N, 121•29'38"W

To make it easier for Bay area drivers, who would need to be on the road by 8am, I propose we meet at 1pm.. you folks have about a 4 hour drive to reach Nacimiento Fergusson, plus fuel stops.

We would then drive about 7 miles of paved road to reach the Coast Ridge Road. We would then be on dirt for about 6 miles, and 30 minutes drive time, to reach the Ridge Campsites. If we cant make the drive up in 2wd, there are options along the way. I have not tested the route in 2wd recently.

Coming from the north Last Gas is in Carmel at
3645 Rio Road
Carmel CA

then map your way to Kirk Creek Campground, which is at the base of Nacimiento Fergusson road where we meet.

Google map it, and print the directions. There is NO Cell phone reception, and your navigation device may not work.

any questions from 2wd or other 1st time folk?Smile

I just changed the shocks on my van to konis today, so much better handling! The only catch for my wife and I going on June Second would be that we get home May 28th from a ten day trip to Seattle and back in the van, so money may be kinda tight? As long as we can afford food and gas, we are totally down! We recently broke our tether to 110V RV sites with the addition of our Propex to the van (no 110V needed for heating the van on cold nights).

The other thing that might keep us from going is, our tent on the van is a little ragged NOW, no telling how it will hold up to TEN nights of use... Stupid Canadian tent won't be made until summer... Laughing

I may be out of town the first weekend in June, so if that is the case I won't be in for Big Sur on June 2...but if I'm not out of town, I will be there for certain.

In the meantime, I'm thinking of making a one night camping trip this Wednesday to Crandall Peak Trail. Just a quick trip for fun. If anyone out there has any interest in meeting out there, let me know. I haven't been before, but it's rated 3/10 and supposedly much of it is accessible in a high clearance 2WD from what I've read. Wednesday is kind of an off day for camping for most people, but I will report back and let you know if it is worth checking out.

Also, would anyone be interested in a trip just north of Lake Tahoe on Memorial Day weekend? From Verdi, NV to Camptonville and Nevada City, CA there are six different trails that are rated between 2-4 out of 10 and total over 200 miles of trails.

Might be up for the June South Coast Ridge road exploration via our 2wd.
How's the group as far as kid-friendliness (as in potential screams in the middle of the night...?)
We've got a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old, so not every night is completely sleep-filled.

OK. Taking back my kid question/warning. The fam won't be able to make the June trip. I consulted the social calendar coordinator (wifey) and we've got previous engagements.

I'm excited to (1wd) explore the hills down the coast, though. Hopefully someday soon...with or without kids.

I'm curious what trails you are going on. I spend a lot of time between Tahoe City and Nevada City. Most of the national forest gates in Tahoe don't open until this coming weekend. Have fun !

> How's the group as far as kid-friendliness

sorry I did not reply sooner, seems my email notifications aren't working..
anyway
Yes, bring kids. Kuleinc is also kid friendly, and maybe madspaniard and family will join the 2wd oriented get together.

> The fam won't be able to make the June trip

I hope you can join us another time

> Any updates John?

I look forward to seeing you June 2 at 1pm at the base of Nacimiento Fergusson Road. The road will be 2wd friendly.

Please Don't be late. We depart at 1:30pm sharp.

I am still waiting for my Syncro to come home, so I can decide which van to drive. I may use my 2wd Westy, I don't think its lack of a heater will matter.

So far I believe we can look forward to a small group that may include, among others, but not all confirmed yet
Kulieinc
myself
Conchyjoe
Wildcat
vwhead
Texxxxx
tdwesty

My agenda is to meet saturday, drive to a camp site and eat BBQ, spend the night Saturday, and return home at some point on Sunday. Im interested in scouting a Surfing oriented get together location for future trips, so on the way North I would like to check for 2wd accessibility to level sleeping options on The Old Coast Road above Andrew Molera State Park. I don't know the area and look forward to others input on legitimate free camping options, and what part of Big Sur to have a beach/surfing oriented meet up somewhere, including Sand Dollar Beach, and other options.

Your local knowledge would be very helpful, maybe get in touch with I am Wildcat by PM to work out a time and place for people to meetup who are interested in a Memorial Weekend Tahoe Trip. I plan to stay home Memorial Weekend.

I am still waiting for the gates to open here in Carnelian Bay. If you google map "Watson Lake, Placer, CA" there is some great camping and tons and tons of forest roads in this area.(the forest roads show up on google) I talked to the forest service last week and they are hoping this weekend. They just want all of the snow off the trails so they do not get torn up.

I have not yet tried this but I have heard a Vanagon can make the first 4-5 miles of the rubicon trail and then you can cut over into blackwood canyon and come back out that way.

There is a campground a mile past the Edwards crossing bridge (dirt narrow windy road) in Nevada City. I think its $7 a night and usually empty. You can walk down to the river from the campground and its some of the best swimming I have ever found.

I will post again if I hear the gates here in Tahoe open.

Interestingly, I also haven't been receiving notifications for this thread either.
I want to be there on the 2nd. All I have to finish is to build my new motor and install it, install gas tank straps and possibly swap in a tranny, we will see how much I get done this weekend. Shocked

So far my tent is holding together, mostly because it's been raining since Oregon and we're in Seattle now. I leave the top down in the rain, kid sleeps on pad on floor, arguably the warmest spot in my westy... Laughing
