You have to get in there front/back with a trouble light and 'finger' it out. If you can't rock the engine on the jack and get it to slide back a little, than you've missed a bolt. _________________ http://s169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/mr_bojangles500/

Thanks Bradey Bunch, None of the manuals refer to these bolts. Since I am working a vehicle like the 412, I am not in any hurry to break things since going to the stealership is not an option. Hopefully I will have this baby up and running soon. I just need to replace oil seals and fuel line. Positive thing is it ran well when I got it. _________________ 1982 Westy, 1974 412 Variant... You are 'over thinking' this whole deal. I'm sure you have enough 'common sense' to pull an engine safely!
Bentley is considered the Bible/Best for VW's
I also really like my Autopress manual I bought used at www.books4cars.com

No...he is not overthinking this...and no there is no Bentley for a type 4. the engine suspension system in the type 4 has no relation to either type 2 or 3 whatsoever. Seriously....if you just pull things loose and "finger it out"...you can screw yourself seriously with this car. Ray |

Yes I am still dropping the engine. When you have twin 2 year olds and a mini farm to take care of getting time to do things is rare...anyway I am down to this...

Do you mean this nut?
The reason I am asking is the haynes and clymer make no mention of removing this nut annd Ray mentions what I think is this nut. The clymer and Haynes just mention the two bolts on each side of the engine support. But for now, the engine is not dropping so something is still holding it up. What bolts is the clymer referinng to on page 168 picture 18?
Also does this look like it is adjusted correctly?
Thanks |
Yes...I mean THAT nut. Leave the one above it alone. The Clymer and the Haynes are incomplete...and poorly laid out but yes...at some point there is mention of this nut. The terms are just labled poorly if memory serves. I will check the books to seeif they mention it...but having had engines in and out of type 4 vehicles...seriously...hundreds of times....trust me. Read what I write and PM me if you are in a hurry. I dont get a chance to look at this forum during the workday these days. Ray |

Sounds like something changed in your preferences so its not dumping your cookies. Also you may have checked that box that says keep me logged in.
Its also possible that your anti-virus is not up to date of turned off. I had that happen once. So instead of dumping cookies and trash every time it updated....it was not updating so none of those little things were happening. Things worth looking at! Ray |

It is out and I can finally clean it up. There is a lot of oil in one of the heat exchangers from oil leaks, does any one have any good tips for cleaning that up? Also I unfortunately pulled out the oil pressure switch wire (it got caught on something when pulling out the engine.
Can anyone tell me where I need to look on the harness to reconnect it?

I'll have to look in the book to see which bundle the oil pressure wire came out of....my 412 is not yet "handy" to go look at.
The heat exchangers...the best thing I have found for this is a pan about 6" deep that you can submerge teh exhcangers into...and use a fairly hot solvent...paint thinner with about 10-20% MEK. You want to dissolve the oils by soaking and pouring through with something that can overpower the baked on oils in places you can't reach. Then usea very strong detergent like castrol purple stuff and a pressure washer at the car wash.
Then...let it rust for a few days and soak it with Ospho to neutralize all rust inside and out. Let that dry for 24 hours. Then paint with high temp paint. Ray |
