Since everyone seems to be in shock here, myself included, about Judy selling her Puck, maybe I can help pick the mood up some.
Ten days ago I came across a Puck and stopped to ask about it. The lady was very nice, and asked me if I was the man who left the note on it. I replied no but I was interested. She showed me the inside which was well used but all there. She said she would sell it but not until after August because she planned to go to Yellowstone N.P. and her other camper, a Toyota might not be ready in time. It was sitting on it's rear axle with two flats. I left her my number and thanked her.
That was a Friday. My wife and I talked about it and agreed I should go talk to her again. Tuesday I went back with cash and an offer to fix her flats on the Toy. She accepted!!! Two new tires,($299.70), four hours labor, some money and now we are the proud owners of a 71 Puck.

Money well spent. Congratulations.
Truly, I would not have sold Reba if I'd had a place to park her at home. _________________ Judy

Thank you! I feel the same way about my 67 kombi. But at least it's pretty dry here. _________________ alpineair

I think we all come to the crossroads of keep vs. sell at some point. You gotta do what's right at the moment. I've thought several times about selling not only my Puck, but my bus as well. Tough decisions for sure. Joe struggled with it, then Judy. I hate to see both Pucks gone from the thread that they helped build, but maybe down the road there'll be another crossroad that puts them right back here.
Alpine, welcome. Cool story! It looks like a great Puck and complete from what I can tell. Nice job.
We like pics in this thread. Post up often. _________________ It's not how wide your hatch is, it's what you do with it.

And I will get to see Reba at campouts. |
Hi Judy, I have been a stranger here in the Puck forum for some time. Too busy with work I guess and spent much less time on The Samba last year.
Still peaked in the threads every so often and sad to see you sold your Puck. Hopefully the new owner gives your Puck the same love.
You still have your Bus?
My Puck has not seen much action for the last 2 years but she stays safe in my shop. I think I will get her out this year though if time permits.
I once was going to sell mine years ago but quickly came to my senses. Hopefully I grow old and grey and still get to enjoy mine. My wife does not like sleeping in it much but I am fond of it so plan on keeping her unless shit hits the fan.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi.

Thanks Kelly. The story gets better. After title and money were exchanged we went to get a few things of hers out of the Puck and she tells me she needs to look in the garage for the tent poles. So I said "tent? do you mean awning". She told me no, not awning, it has a tent. She didn't find the poles but it didn't matter to me, the Puck was the real prize! After I got it home and started poking around I pulled the tent bag out from under the rear seat and there were the poles in a separate bag.
Been busy cleaning it up. I'm chomping at the bit to do some work to it but I don't want to get too far along that we can't use it. Ordered wheels and tires yesterday. Went the 12" route. Anyone running 8" wheels should be very careful and not run at highway speeds.

wow, way cool! When is the first campout?
BTW, hang on to those original wheels. FYI, pages (roughly) 14-17 have a lot of good info on redoing the bearings and tires.
Both TJ and I have completely gone through our bearings on our Pucks. I know mine rolls with ease both around the driveway and behind my vehicle. _________________ It's not how wide your hatch is, it's what you do with it.

Soon as I get the wheels and bearings squared away!
Could not find 10" tires anywhere, I didn't try Coker because I heard they were pricey. Also a bus buddy with Puck has been very happy with his for five or six years.
Tomorrow I'll pull the hubs, weather permitting. _________________ alpineair

Reminds me I need to repack the bearings again since I always loose a bit of grease behind the seal and wheels after a trip.

I never put up my tent. It was too heavy for me. I expect the new owner to do so. _________________ Judy

Very helpful, although the tire info may be dated.

It is heavy, you really need two people. We didn't figure it out completely, one of the poles was jammed into the wrong spot and we can't remove it. I'll have some more photos up later today. _________________ alpineair

Too wet to work on hubs yesterday, and my wheels didn't come in. We have a big show next Sunday in Denver, VW's on the Green #18 and for the first time I'll have a swap spot. So I've been gathering up all my bay and vanagon stuff.
My tongue [on the Puck], needs some work.
Need to cut the old tank holder off and clean this all up.
Ordered a new awning from Dave and Matt at Shovebus. Excellent service despite a glitch on my end. _________________ alpineair

What's the plan for holding your tank once you remove this one?
I was lucky with ours. The PO was a welder and fab'd a bracket to hold a full size tank in the front without taking away from the overall look of the Puck. _________________ It's not how wide your hatch is, it's what you do with it.

I'll mount a 5# tank on it. Seems more proportional. A buddy has a 10# tank on his and has only filled it once- seven years ago!
Re-checked some tire links and it appears that this one may have ten inch tires.

Cabinets are in decent shape. Nothing that can't be fixed. Tried to upload some pics and got a message saying our catagory has reached it's quota.
Ordered new wheel seals today and picked up the 12" wheels. Haven't heard from the tire guy yet.
Cut the old propane holder off and started wiring 1/4" of paint off of the tongue. Found a serial number which matches mine except it has a s before it. Took the little flipper part of the handle apart and discovered a broken spring of sort.
Also pulled the stovetop out to refurbish that and to find that light blue paint. BTW the gas-air mixture slide on our stove was wide open. Could be due to the altitude here. When I fired it up the first time the flame on one burner was a little off, [yellow with the blue], the other was fine. _________________ alpineair

In other news, I believe I have found a source for the veneer locally. The rear shelf on mine has delaminated and the PO put a lot of holes in the table. If anyone has a good shot of the hardware that holds the table at the shelf I would like to see what I'm missing.
While I'm on the table question, what's the trick to get the table into sleeping mode? I have two large round dowels, but when I set the table on them the leg is in the way. if you flip it over it's right under the cushion. I think I must not have the right dowels. The Po did mention that she slept with the table up. _________________ alpineair

To my knowledge, at least it is the way I saw and do it, the table does not work to hold the mattresses up at all. You just use the open space under the bed to slide the table under to get it out of the way.
The two dowels slide in the grooves between the left and right side bench seats and just those two dowels alone allow the middle mattress to get the support.
It seems like your message above sounded like you were trying to have the table be a support of some kind on top of the dowels but I don't believe that is the case.
Maybe I misunderstood the question?
So remove the table from the cabinet edge as it has these brackets that allow you to slide the table off and then get it out of the way, down on the floor. Then use your dowels between seats as your frame to support the mattress.

You got the question right, Tj. Not knowing how it worked I thought the table was used to make the bed. it's common with a lot of rv's. In Europe I believe they refer to it as a "gaucho?" set-up. Thanks for the reply, I'll go see how that works with the dowels I have.
Seals came in today, but the tire guy did not order my 12" tires until today. So it looks like I will not get to the hubs till Monday. _________________ alpineair

The seat cushions slide to the center and the back cushions tuck in by the walls.
I also left my table in place. I just made half the bed. The dowels got in the way of my feet though and I was working on a way to not use them. _________________ Judy
