I have been trying to figure out where the parcel shelf clasp for the rear seatback should be located. The parcel shelf of my 69 rusted out just where the clasp is screwed on and I cannot figure out the location. I would appreciate your help on where and how it should be screwed on. A pic would be appreciated or maybe direct me to a thread that covers it?

Thanks!

Can't find the thread at the moment but here's a picture of the seat back clasp from the Aug '68 manual:

This is also a 69 Ghia. Mine is little rusty too, but you can clearly see the location of the single hole to mount the plastic seat latch, directly in the center of the car.

Mine parcel shelf had about a thousand holes from various attempts at mounting other latches there, in addition to several botched speaker installs! I had to install a metal bar to get some meat there, then mounted a brass window latch.

Geez, Paul. I've got a parcel shelf for sale in my ads I would have been happy to sell you as a complete replacement!

Thanks loads guys! Big help! I'm in the process of fabricating a metal patch on the rusted area and was having a hard time figuring out where to drill the hole to attach the latch on the shelf. The pics really help. John, I might go and try to check out the manual just to see how the hook on the shelf is attached.

Thanks again!

That's what I am expecting, when I install the rear backrest it will be obvious where the clasp should go. Right now I'll just patch the hole. I'll position the clasp and drill the hole later.

Thanks!

I may go that way when it comes time for a proper restoration. I was looking at what to do with the shelf when I remembered a friend had given me a set of prototype/research speakers with gianormus magnet structures. The holes would be big enough to eliminate 95% of the mounting holes in the shelf, so I went for it and was pleased with the results. The OEM latch would be nice, but we have an autistic child who likes hiding in the cargo area...
