ok, a very noob question but this is giving me a headache, I bought the car in pieces and I suspect it has a later dash top as it doesn't have the forward tabs. my clocks fit in but don't "lock" in place with the tabs and I also have the 3 plastic rings but these don't make any sense either!

Retrovan in South Africa is selling LHD & RHD reproduction dashes. You might need one from him to successfully get your dash put together? _________________ http://s169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/mr_bojangles500/

I need to find out what's what but before I waste money on a repro dash! my RHD dash is in very good condition except a very small crack so would like to stay with this one if I can help it!
do you know how the clock fit in the dash? do the clocks go in 1st then dash top over them?

I think this answers my question some what, I'm trying to fit early clocks into a later dash top and the clocks just aren't deep enough to "click" into place..
where do I go from here? modify the dash or clocks?

Its my understanding that there are two sizes of clips to hold the instruments in place,The later versions are shorter in length, perhaps there is your problem!

Yup, up to 70 used 1 style (with the longer clips), and 72 to 73 used the other style with the short clips. Also, 71 used a different clock, in that it used short mounting legs (like the late style), but with a gray face (like the early style). You can change the mounting legs though. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

thanks for the info! no I don't have a curved channel, what does it look like? I was thinking of just painting that area matt black to hide it a little, thought it was strange and some how not right..
can I just cut my mounting tabs down? and does anybody know the difference in length I would need to cut off?
@ Yeti69, thanks for posting that link! |

Where do the three plastic rings fit into the equation? No idea where or how they attatch.. I'm thinking of cutting the clips down to suit but only have one shot at getting it tight!

I do have one speedometer out of eight that has a loose black plastic ring slipped on it. I don't think it is used in addition to the plastic rings molded into the dash itself? _________________ http://s169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/mr_bojangles500/

OK, this is what I have, what appears to be a later dash top (doesn't have the mounting tabs at front), early clocks and the plastic rings! looks like I'm missing the spring from the speedo too..
the dash pad looks like it has some plastic rings bonded in from the factory..

Looks like you have an extra set. They are in the dash properly.
You're missing the wave spring on the speedo though.
Shouldn't ALL dashes have the mounting tabs? _________________ 69 Fastback Build (Doris) |

Try the speedometer without a spring. The late dashes don't have/need mounting tabs in front. _________________ http://s169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/mr_bojangles500/

I didn't know that. What holds it in place? Is that the curved piece Bob mentioned?
A bit of image searching and I found an early car with a late dash.

thanks guys, so I can forget those plastic rings I have! if you look at the lower mounting tab on the speedo you can just about make out where I put a marker pen line from behind when it was in the dash, works out about 5mm difference.
regarding the dash tabs, that's another obstacle I have to get past as my early dash metal doesn't have the metal mounting channel, I found this out yesterday when I looked at another guys late fastback.. any suggestions how to secure it a little bit better? or will it be just fine? |

Yup, what he has is an early car with a late style (like the crappy repops) dash pad. That style (the 71 on) uses a "C" channel to hold the front of the dash pad in place. If you still have the glass out, and can source the "C" channel from a 71 and later car, then you could install the "C" channel in the early car to hold the front of the dash pad in place (I did that on my 65 Notch way back in 2001).
Or you could use liquid nails to glue the pad to the dash. I've seen that done before too. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
