fitting dash top and clocks on a 68..

ok, a very noob question but this is giving me a headache, I bought the car in pieces and I suspect it has a later dash top as it doesn't have the forward tabs. my clocks fit in but don't "lock" in place with the tabs and I also have the 3 plastic rings but these don't make any sense either!

Retrovan in South Africa is selling LHD & RHD reproduction dashes. You might need one from him to successfully get your dash put together?

I think this answers my question some what, I'm trying to fit early clocks into a later dash top and the clocks just aren't deep enough to "click" into place..

where do I go from here? modify the dash or clocks?

Its my understanding that there are two sizes of clips to hold the instruments in place,The later versions are shorter in length,perhaps there is your problem!

I forgot to mention this; the dash pad goes on first, the the gauges go in. If you don't have the tabs for the front, do you have a curved channel that the front of the dash fits into?

I had the same issue,
as the instruments I used are not the original ones, the tabs were to short and and I had to exchange the tabs, look:

I hope you have another set of instruments for a replacement source!

There are also some sort of spring type rings around the instruments, at least they were on mine...

Where do the three plastic rings fit into the equation? No idea where or how they attatch.. I'm thinking of cutting the clips down to suit but only have one shot at getting it tight!

I do have one speedometer out of eight that has a loose black plastic ring slipped on it. I don't think it is used in addition to the plastic rings molded into the dash itself?

OK, this is what I have, what appears to be a later dash top (doesn't have the mounting tabs at front), early clocks and the plastic rings! looks like I'm missing the spring from the speedo too..

the dash pad looks like it has some plastic rings bonded in from the factory..

Looks like you have an extra set. They are in the dash properly.

You're missing the wave spring on the speedo though.

Shouldn't ALL dashes have the mounting tabs?

Try the speedometer without a spring. The late dashes don't have/need mounting tabs in front.

thanks guys, so I can forget those plastic rings I have! if you look at the lower mounting tab on the speedo you can just about make out where I put a marker pen line from behind when it was in the dash, works out about 5mm difference.

regarding the dash tabs, that's another obstacle I have to get past as my early dash metal doesn't have the metal mounting channel, I found this out yesterday when I looked at another guys late fastback.. any suggestions how to secure it a little bit better? or will it be just fine?
