| How did the '56 seat bottom work out for ya? |
I just got back from New Orleans Jazz Fest on Monday night. I left last Wed and all I could do before trip was strip the pad and cover. Just recently I wire wheeled it and sprayed it with rustoleum rust converter. Tomorrow it gets a coat of black semi gloss. Thanks again it looks great. You think my backseat passengers will have that RHD accent?

| And how did ya fix the rear ashtray |
Found one for $10 shipped to the house, from CA nonetheless. No worries I haven't given up on it just yet. It just might be a rainy day or winter project.

and did your window crank knobs ever free up for ya? ......Doug |
I got the passenger one to free up a bit, but not much.
As soon as I got back from your house the very next day I ran a ground wire from the bottom of the speedo light cluster right to the ignition and bam, fixed! Both ignition lights come on with the key, who knew. All this time I thought I had it right.
Another project was to fix my fuel line. I tried to re-use the old one but I have learned some parts are just past their prime. Installed the new one, check out the difference.

Well - your link stated that it is probably not suited for removing blood from the road, and indeed has some effect on rust. What's your point? I have used Coke to free pistons, and it works. (Maybe not perfect, but it works.)
Anyway, the resto looks super nice! I can almost feel the smell! |

hey schwing...
i haven't posted in your thread in a while. the car's looking great! i remember you were gonna keep the black with red interior at the start of herman's journey. i really like the color combo you have now.
i think i have the same problem with my seat back. nice to see your solution. i'll probably do the same. _________________ "Broadsword calling Dannyboy"

Guys thanks! Well I am reaching the end of the resto. Of course plenty left to fiddle with over the years, including a trans swap next winter and who knows what else down the road as part of routine maintenance.
Back seat bottom all done and I took my son for a ride to a local car show. Representing for the VW community, front and center. Where's Herman?
Back seat Driver. One HAPPY boy let me tell you.
And here it is without the car seat:
Parked out front after the show:

Mike and Greg thanks guys!
Rud - I talked to Herman and he's scared of boats, some tramatic story from back in April 57 when he was shipped from Germany. Sorry sir!
Just wrapping up the final details to get ready for the first VW show on 5/26 in Manassas, VA. Turns out that HDTV/Velocity Channel will be filming the show! Very cool.
-New vac advance line installed.
-Repaired Driver door handle with another handle from CA. Had to swap out lock cylinders.
-Adjusted thermostat, it was opening up too far once the engine was warm.
-Flushed trans fluid
-Detailed Rear suspension (overspray since I painted it with the body on)
-Remounted spare tire with a tube due to a slow leak
-Packed up Emergency roadside kit
-Owners manual now in glovebox. Important detail! ha
Brakes get bled again for the 3rd time tomorrow, even after adjusting shoes a couple of times, they are still a touch spongy. _________________ My '57 build:

Well I had a 70+ mile round trip Shakedown cruise on Friday and I broke my transmission shifter coupler. Rigged it up with some epoxy and a piece of wire to get home.
Ordered the new one and it shows up tomorrow. Hopefully I can get everything installed before the show in VA this weekend. Fun stuff! _________________ My '57 build:

Thanks Darren, it was great to meet you in person yesterday!
I had a great day and an even better time driving there and back. 150 miles round trip and no issues.
Enroute:
At the hotel (thanks to the bikers for keeping a close eye on the bug while I slept)
At the show:

Ah, the Woodrow Wilson bridge and the southern Loop of 495/Capitol Beltway on Memorial Day weekend a very brave and determined car and driver indeed. Too bad with the reflection can't quite be sure the speedo is at 55. |
