I took my 1.9 speedo apart the other day to get it working again. It seemed very simple at first: the top bar had simply edged its way over to the right (looking at it from behind), such that the gear wasn't engaging the worm gear. The far (left) end had a wimpy crimp to keep it from doing this. So I pushed it over. Speedo was back! ...for about 200 miles. It happened again, so I used some heavy duty vise-grips to flatten the far end of the bar so it couldn't get back through the wall. Problem solved! ...for a mile. I took it apart and used a drill to simulate the input drive. I could not for the life of me see what was going wrong, but it's farther down in the works.
I'd like to just swap from some other VW at the junkyard. No-go?
Thanks bros.

I doubt it,
most 80s (watercooled) vws used the speedo driven from the transaxle.
and the little numbers in the lower middle of the speedo are around 1500 where your 2wd vanagon is around 850 I think.. that's the Rev's/mile
the differance that the 2wd van is driven from the front wheels like a classic beetle.
there's a few good threads here on speedo revival, and then i believe Van cafe sells/refurbishes vanagon speedos
best of luck.. I haven't had my Odo for alittle while.
and yes I tried to fix it once already too. _________________ VW Club of Central New York SPRING VW GTG

That is right, no go. All of the VW cars speedo cables spin about twice as fast at the same driving speed as 2wd Vanagon speedo cables. The speedo reading would be way off, half what it should be.
On the other hand Vanagon Syncro speedo cable speeds are close to the same as some VW cars.

The guys at VanCafe do a great job!
We bought our Westy with a non-functioning speedo, and had it fixed in Santa Cruz as a treat enroute down the West Coast--Vancouver to San Diego.
A well-spent $100 or so with a couple of hours to wander Santa Cruz. Done in fall 2010 and working great since then.

I'm interested, but two things:
(1) your speedometer is within 110 miles of mine! That's kinda weird.
(2) How long for this world can your speedo be with so many miles on it?
Edit:
Another way to put it is that my speedo went out less than 110 miles after the number of miles yours is at! |
