I think you might have a bad ign switch
When they go bad they can let loose,,- and stop the turn over --and they can also turn the engine over but not provide 12 volts to the coil.
You have no idea whether or not the coil is receiving power-- it looks like you have fuel.
You need to get another person and take a volt ohm meter to the coil and see (1) do you have power to the coil -- do not leave the ign on on very long - I might burn your ign wire if the points are closed -this is why you need two people
(2) do you have power when the key is over to the start position - The parts for the ign are about $10.00 Volt ohm meters at harbor freight $3.00

The starter sounds like it's not engaging the flywheel every time. When it does turn - is it flooded? Are you holding the gas pedal down all the way when starting it?

Jerry, I do have power when the ignition is in the "on" position, my radio works, head lights, dash lights and all. So i'll have to wait for my brother to get home in order to run to the store.
Also, in the picture below, is that how you hook up the ohm meter to see if it is producing enough to the coil?
Baccaruda, i've been erie about flooding the engine, so I haven't been pressing the gas all the way down, i've just pumped it a few times to see if it would take gas and fire up.
It's been doing this to me for the past wee, and I haven't been able to drive myself to work or anything, and it's getting quite annoying. I just want to be able to drive this beauty! Is that to much to ask for! D: _________________ 74' Super

For sure the starter isn't engaging the flywheel all of the time by the sounds of it. I would make sure you are getting spark, it doesn't sound to be firing at all.
Also, in the pic that Jerry posted, that is a safety wire for the just in case moment that happens too often....it's a wire that holds the fuel line in...just in case...the tube on the carb comes loose. It keeps your from frying your bug. _________________ Preserving history one piece at a time!

I'm going to be getting new spark plugs soon, I don't know how old the ones that are currently in there are. So hopefully that might be the solution if it isn't getting a spark. And i've seen online, that the starters aren't to much. So if thats the case, i'll just have to get a new one. _________________ 74' Super

That would be a good plan. I had that problem before and it turned out to be a bad coil. I wasn't getting a hot enough spark to fire. Now I know this is a stupid question, but are all of your fuses good? Seems at one time I had a bug that wouldn't fire and do what yours is doing due to a defective fuse that looked good but wasn't. I was sooooo pissed at my car until I figured it out and then felt like an idiot for not checking my fuses.
Just an idea...
Also, check the connections that you have between the coil and the distributor. You may think that the connections are good, that is til you pull the wire and it slips right out of the connector. Been there, done that before too. _________________ Preserving history one piece at a time!

I haven't yet, but i'll definitely check those here in a second, and i'm sure with my luck it won't be the fuse, it will be the most expensive thing there is. :p I'll get looking into the coils and such and see if I can find something else out. _________________ 74' Super

Assuming that the coil is indeed wired up correctly....
and that the distributor cap and rotor are actually on there correctly, stick that dwell meter on the green points wire and see if you getting a reading of about 47º +/- 3º. If you have a "points replacement module" you should still get a reading (ie not "0"), it just won't mean anything.

I know this doesn't help the starting issue but, the vacuum port on the Carb is hooked up wrong. It should be connected to the port on the left side of the Carb. Also u might want to check your timing. Try 7.5 degrees btdc. Ur motor looks like a single port with a vac only dist. Just like mine.

So I tried the jumper wire and it still didn't work, I tightened alot of the other wires that may have been loose, and still nothing. I'm in need of a spark plug socket so I can check my spark plugs, so i'll have to grab one while i'm out. _________________ 74' Super
