A GOOD SITE TO JOIN UP ON FOR THIS IS Triketalk.com lots of people there can help.. I am also doing a vw trike. I have seen this done before you have to drill the tin behind the hub and be careful of placement check out the other site prolly can help better.

I've seen solutions like this used to provide a signal for an aftermarket electronic speedometer...

This application is too large for a T1 CV, but similar sized chopper wheels are available for T1 CV's.

I think this would actually be easier than a chopper wheel(a lot easier if you have a swingaxle and no CVs) and probably just as cheap and accurate

Another chopper wheel/pulse generating ring source -

The Quick Sync GPS was an option that I wasn't aware of... how does it do in mountainous terrain/cities with high-rise buildings, etc? Any tales of satellite 'line of sight' issues?

I'm sure there are interruptions in areas like you mention, but its probably rare unless you live in a city like NY and if you stay moving its probably brief.
