I have tried rebuilding the carbutetor, complete tune up, new gas tank to get rid of the dirt, new fuel lines and filter.
It starts right up when cold. After it gets warm it won't idle. You have pump the pedal to keep it running. By pass and volume control screws do nothing. It is an original car with 57,000 miles.. Running with most of its original parts.
Any help would be great.
Thanks

Blow out the idle jet again! It may have gotten a spec of crap during all the swapping of bits you did..

Assuming you have a svda dizzy, make sure your vacuum lines are leak free.

Does your idle cut off switch click when you disconnect the wire?

The vacuum lines are new.
The idle cut off valve is clean and working.
If I were to replace this carburetor what would the best choice be?
Can you go back to late sixties carburetor?
Thanks again!

Try a redneck carb rebuild. Rev your engine to the max and then slap your hand over the throat of the carb. Do this a couple of times and see if that makes any difference.

The carb is a 34 pict 3
Can you use an older type carb?
What is the difference between the motor in a 74 Thing and the motor in a 74 Bettle?
Haven't tried the shade tree idea yet. But I will give it shot.
Thanks

I think I post this everytime someone has a problem with idling, but it's the only trick I know: Make sure everything is screwed down tight on your fuel system. My automatic fuel cutoff comes loose and causes the same problem. It won't idle and dies at stop signs, etc., but it starts right back up and you can drive away. I wind up revving the engine like someone who doesn't have 46hp under the lid. It usually takes me a day or two to remember to tighten it. I would check anything else that might be letting in extra air, but the experts on here will know what else to check a lot better than me.

Its crazy how the smallest air leak can totally screw up the idle. I had a tiny leak in the manifold to hose below the carb and it make tuning impossible. I sprayed everything with carb cleaner to try and find a lead and nothing. It would race sometimes and othertimes die at the stop sign. Finally just felt a little air pulling in around the hose. replaced it with a smaller diameter and bam! runs great. I have a 34pict3 as well.

If someone has overtightened the idle jet on the right side of your carb.(viewing from the rear). It will crush the small point into the jets seating area. This can also damage the seat. Try barely (do while running) unscrewing the jet and see if it won't start ideling. If it does, take the jet out and put some sealent on the threads, screw it back in,backing it out the amount needed. When i say barely back out ,i mean barely.

Won't idle solved. I put o-rings in the throttle shafts, sealed the mounting base to the intake. I now can adjust the idle and rpm. It's not exactly like I remembered from 40 years ago but neither am I.
Thanks for all your help.

I was wondering the same thing. The 34pict3 on my Thing engine has only plastic bushings on the throttle shaft, no o-rings. Being able to replace o-rings to solve a shaft leak would be nice.
