I've posted a few times around here, so figured it was time (finally got pics uploaded) to post photos of my Betty, but still not progress pics. It's also a great place to ask the bajillion questions I foresee and unforesee. She's rough, and something is always going wrong, but I love her anyways.

Yes, I got new fuel lines and did away with the filter in the engine compartment.

First question(s) [here]:

About half of the time I engage the turn signal lever (either way), the turn signals won't work and instead of their indicator lights I get the generator light and the fuel gauge dropping to R then back. And sometimes, even after the turn signals are off, the generator light will stay on, sometimes short sometimes long. I figure the problem to be wiring in the dash, but at the same time the stick on the steering column has been weird--the high-beams will stick on or off.

Do you think it's just a crossed wire in the dash? Could the generator light actually be indicating an issue pertinent to the light's purpose?

Thanks.

First off, welcome here! Oklahoma Representin'
Cool
Sounds like your wire problem could be the devil. I had problems similar to yours. Best way to do is look at the wiring diagram or find pics on thesamba that show you what it's supposed to look like. You ever come to Tulsa? If you do I have a passenger side kick panel you can have...its a little warped haha

So the problem magically morphs without me touching a thing. Today the turn signals don't work at all, but the emergency flashers work (the ful guage still "blinks" with them), neither the oil or generator light come on when I turn the key, and the generator light is on when the bus is running. I'm rather perplexed and am planning to trace every wire this weekend, unless somebody can tell me a good starting point. Thanks.

Sounds like there are some wires connected incorrectly and probably some loose connections as well. The only way to fix it is to go through and make sure everything is as it should be. Make a list and mark off everything that you've checked as you go along. Great looking bus btw, a little tlc and that thing will be sweet!

That's what I was afraid of. haha.
She's a cool bus, tons of personality. She apparently wants me to hit every chapter of the Bentley before we really get started... I'm hoping she turns out sweet, I'm trying to completely personalize her at every turn. She is so far from stock already: beat up, has the nose of a later model, etc, so I figure to keep her on the road and strong while customizing to my needs. For example: I want to put in a trap door to look down on the engine like in T4 buses, rubberize the floor so I can hose it out, replace the interior panels with custom/pragmatic pieces that hold emergency supplies, convert to a puppet stage, and all kinds of weird, groovy stuff; I also intend to install an extra set of mounts so I can turn the middle seat sideways against the driver's side wall for chill sessions; not to mention removable interior parts for different mission capabilities. It's a crazy plan for a crazy bus and driver. But alas, I have a TON of normal work to do before I tackle the crazy stuff.

I hear ya, my bus has had some strange electrical tampering in the past but its working ok now so I will leave it alone although I'm sure it could be improved. I'm all for keeping things original but when major things have already been altered like you mentioned I say do what you want with it within reason. Are you planning on repainting or touching up the paint? Is the paint original?

Could also be a ground issue in the harness somewhere. Betty is a cool looking bus. Definitely has character!

She was originally blue, but most of the paint is not original. If you look with the right light you can see about 3 different paint jobs. I do plan to paint her, but likely will not do the original blue. I love the blue, but have a good deal on orange (and coincidently, orange has long been my signature color).

I've been figuring it to be a ground issue for the most part, so that's where I'll start when I get the opportunity to work on her.

And Betty is already famous here on base, I'll get stopped randomly by people at the PX by people asking about her, or get greeted with cheers when I pull up to the Brigade's parking lot.

It looks like the body is very straight other than some issues with the nose and rear corners. If you paint it orange I would recommend painting it inside and out, it will likely annoy you forever if you don't. I know you mentioned modifying the interior, have you thought about making it into a tin top camper?

I'm still working on the design for a 'swap-out' camper interior, but don't know how far I want to take it.

The first thing I would check is the flasher relay. If you have a slightly leaky wind shield water will often find its way into the relay body and cause these symptoms. Unplug the relay and take the relay body apart to check for moisture and let it dry out if wet. There are a few threads around about taking the replay apart. So just do a quick search and you will find more info.

Brilliant thinking! It did just rain, and I know she leaks... I'm gonna check that first thing in the morning.

I'm really stumped now. I no longer get any power when I turn the key. No starter, no warning lights, no radio, no turn signals, no fuel gauge. The 4-way flashers work, so it makes me think it's not the relay...Am I wrong to think so? I took the column apart to check the ignition switch wires, but they're all hooked up. I've traced most wires and can't find an issue, unless I'm overlooking something. While playing with the fuse box I've found that the manual posted on the Samba and the Bentley differ on the location of certain fuses, and tracing wires I find they're different too! I've also discovered that my 4-way flashers work with all 12 fuses removed...I'm not sure what to think about that!!! I'm completely perplexed at this point, and am wondering if the problem could be somewhere further back in the bus and not in the wire nest under the dash? I need serious help here. hahaha

Is it just me, or has that nose already been replaced? She has late bay turn signals.

Anyway, looking forward to your progress!

The nose was supposedly replaced sometime in the 90s.

Welcome from OKC. Looks like you have a great bus to work with Smile My girl and I were actually thinking of making a trip to Lawton soon. Could drop by and help...if I can get on base.
