Hi,
I'm picking up an Aztec II in a week or so (pictures coming once I have it home), and I'm wondering if there's enough information in this picture for a good guess at what engine the Aztec is using.
Thanks!

Cant tell for sure...but interesting-- probably a 1600 based on the Dogouse fan shroud. But it looks like it has A/c, which I guess might not be crazy in Florida. Carbs look like either 'baby Webers' or little Dellortos-- just based on the fact that they usually run those air filers.
but no way to say for sure from that picture...might be a Subaru !~? _________________

| It looks like someone went above and beyond to install the breather system correctly. If everything was engineered this well it might be a winner. Can't wait to see more pics. |

Thanks guys. That all sounds good.
Yes, it's got a/c.
From what I understand, it's registered as a '61. I don't know if that's '61 VW or '61 kit car, but being an Aztec II, it couldn't have been built before '65, as I understand it.
I sold a car and I'm waiting for the money from that one to go pick this one up. That should be on the 21st or 22nd.
Here's a pic:

It's definitely a VW engine; doghouse fan shroud, dual carbs, most likely dual-port. My bet is stock 1600, or maybe a 1776. Only way to know for sure is to pull the heads & measure the cylinder bores, but it won't give you any crank stroke info...

Thanks, Bryan.
The car comes with a 3-4" stack of paperwork. Hopefully, there will be some engine info in there. |

Built and registered are two different things. Any kit car can be built on an older pan, it's done all the time, so it's very possible you have a II that's on an early '61 pan. I've always thought these cars very cool and outside the norm. Seeing the cage inside the canopy suggests to me that the builder took his time and thought stuff through - you probably have a very well built car on your hands. Unless you measure the distance between the piston at TDC and BDC, then it will give you exact stroke. |

True - but this is presuming that the OP has the tools/skills to pull this off...
If it runs, I'd say - 'drive it'.

He does. He's been building cars since he was 13. (Which wouldn't mean much if he was currently 14 or 15, but he's almost 50.)
At the same time, I know nothing about VW engines, so I'll be asking a lot of questions soon.
Thanks again! |

NICE find! I would make sure to give him a deposit to lock it in. That is SWEET! _________________ Street legal fiberglass rocket ship
