How do people run their 6V starters and trannys with 200mm flywheels???? |
The 200 mm designation is only for the clutch disc surface, not the overall flywheel diameter.
There are 200mm disc flywheels with 109 teeth. So thats a 200mm with 6 volt teeth.
Easy identification... to know what you need.
Count your teeth on your flywheel.
Its either
109 = 6 volt,
or
132 = 12 volt.
Then choose your starter to match . If its 132 teeth you will need a 12 volt starter, and use a conversion bushing,
or an Auto Stick Starter.
If its 109 teeth, your good with your 6 volt starter and orignal bushing. _________________ aka Ken

Ahhhhh...it becomes clear. Sometimes I need things beat into me. I'll grab a marker and get counting. And (gasp!) maybe, just maybe, the bushing I have IS the conversion bushing.... _________________ 1966 Beetle

| This 66 is coming along well. I have been following this thread for sometime but have never posted. Really like the engine. Would you be willing to let me know what you have money wise in the engine build. I am looking at rebuilding my SP 1600 toward the end of the summer. My intention is to get it back in by Nov. Last year my 66 developed an oil leak that has just gotten worse, putting 1 qt a week now...been in the car for almost 20yrs....Sorry for the winded post. |

Which engine? It really varies when it comes to a build. All I had in my 1600 build was maybe $300 including the motor itself. But I didn't need to go through the bottom end. It just got all new gaskets and cleaning from the top end up.
My 40hp was done twice. Once just a top end build - all I had was the price of the gasket kit. Then I upgraded it with a Mahle Big Bore kit - Those run about $300.
I will have a pretty penny in my 1641. It's being professionally line bored and cleaned, crank will be balanced and I have all new pistons, jugs, Sig Erson 1:5 rockers, and more.
This current build is a jacked up budget build. I have WAY more than I should have in it because I got screwed with the motor purchase and I've been running into lots of problems and with things I don't have any experience with.
It all depends on what you start with and where you want to go with it and what route you take.
But I can tell you, if you decide to set a budget, go ahead and prepare to double it. You never know what you might run into! _________________ 1966 Beetle

Your Steel in Motion has me scrambling these last few days... Im glad Im not helping organize an event too.
Just read page 12 of my build thread.... the long story has been posted.
Im still making the show though... If it weren't for Steel In Motion "Operation X" would still be under a tarp on blocks. _________________ aka Ken

Hmmm...I understand. I'll go check it out. And well, the bug won't make it to Steel In Motion. Today's rain took away my last day I had to finish her up. _________________ 1966 Beetle

I figure that's the best idea. Just keep plugging away.
Got the bellhousing ground out this afternoon.
I can get a 200mm flywheel up on the shaft but didn't spin it since I don't have a clutch attached.
Found that the generator that came with the motor is completely mangled inside so I ordered another. Hubby will pick it up for me in the morning and slap on my starter for me. Got a couple of friends coming to try to help me get it installed.
Then - next step is plugs, coil, battery and bulbs! Maybe, just maybe - it might fire up soon. _________________ 1966 Beetle

Outlaw,
Thank you for responding. I am wanting to build something along the same lines, not much more than stock for the most part. I will have the heads freshened, a new cam, and reseal the engine. Of course i will paint, clean and redo all that is needed or found during tear down. One good thing is that the car drives and runs just fine now, just leaks like the exxon valdez from everywhere....I will also redo the exhaust and heaterboxes. Thank you again |

Have you done a leak down test to determine where the oil is escaping from??? Could be a simple fix... _________________ Wandering

Good idea. Plus, I also had an oil leak (not 1 qt a week) but I thought it was from my push rod tubes. I took my car to one of those do it yourself car washes and cleaned the underside of the motor really, really good then drove it for a good 45 minutes. No missing where the leak was coming from - tiny crack in the case. _________________ 1966 Beetle

| Thanks for the replies. There is oil everywhere, i have cleaned and used dye in the oil. Appears the main leak is on the top and running down, i am thinking cooler seals. Oil pressure is a bit low too, only about 25 when hot at 3000+rpms. Engine has been in the car since 1994, not too sure on mileage, but its safe to say...its time for an overhaul. My goal is to put about 6-700 into it. P/C, heads freshened, new cam and lifters, bearings and lots of cleaning! |

That is so easy to fix, not worth a blown engine. Replace the seals, dump the old oil and put some new oil in it, this will make your motor happy. _________________ Wandering

It's in got a few issues, tho.
Missing one engine bolt - one that goes thru the starter
Decklid won't close over breather.
Throttle cable doesn't return when I press the gas pedal - just goes to the floor and stays there.
Generator strap is too thick. Doesn't fit between intake and bottom of generator stand.
Still gotta add fuel line, coil and bracket, belt, voltage regulator, plugs and wires and probably a few other things I'm too tired to remember. _________________ 1966 Beetle

Can you rotate your Air Cleaner? Is there a return spring on your carb.? Also if your generator Strap has been installed before, and has taken a shape, I find that they will only go on when rotated in the right spot. (If that makes any sence) Engine looks awesome, Nice job. But that drivers side overrider support tube could use a Polish. |

I was thinkin' the passenger side overrider top support could use some dulling...and "patina"
Looking good there Outlaw..
Those Pinto Bean Carbs have issues clearing decklid on 66 and prior.. I mentioned that earlier. Make sure you adjust the carb forward where it will hit the fan shroud and that nice shiny paint of yours. If its not enough and you have room, modify the cleaner base to slide forward a little. Catch 22, when you modify.. something always has to give.
As for the throttle return spring. In addition to the one you have now, you can add a spring on the cable like the early VW's use. Thats one way to help. Be sure nothing is binding.

I'll see if the air cleaner will rotate. I was also gonna look for a low profile round one that might work, too. I just do NOT like stand offs. But they might be a good idea anyway since an 1835 runs so hot.
It's a new generator strap. I switched from 6V to 12V. It's just a little too thick. Hubby is gonna try to do a little grinding and if that doesn't work, a giant hose clamp will blend right in.
I agree on the polish. They have a heat paint on them, and I'm betting there was something on the support tube that bled through. Hmmm...
I'll get a side pic of the card. I'm not even familiar with these weber progressives. It feels so weak even when I push the throttle lever back. Is there such a thing as an additional helper spring? _________________ 1966 Beetle
