|
|
First thing you'll notice is that this is a "universal replacement case" that wasn't tapped for the oil pressure sending unit up by the distributor, so I'm running it with the Type 3 OP sending unit out the back of the oil cooler. The shroud has been "notched" to clear it.....the only modification I made is the half-moon shaped notch that extends just a little too far to the right of the sending unit.
Problem is, there seems to be a lot of extra space. It looks like the tin has already been trimmed b/c on the left of the sending unit, the base of the oil cooler is covered but on the right, it's exposed. Should I cover that with something?
I'm also concerned about the space with the screwdriver stuck into it. Seems to me that a little too much of the oil cooler is exposed and that I'll be losing air flow volume. But would that be hot air that's already passed through the cooler or would it be air needed to cool the oil? In general, does the shroud mate with the cylinder tin or is there always a bit of a gap? I can't find a picture in the gallery that shows this area well enough to tell.
Altogether the fit is a little cheesy and you can see I had to use some weather stripping just to get a decent seal b/w the triangular piece and the shroud.
Any suggestions, comments, recommendations?
Oh, and yes, it has a Hoover bit modified to clear the sending unit. |

The part by the screw driver goes on first and then the triangle part goes on over that. You have the order of installation reversed. _________________ *DISCLAIMER* What you see might not be what I typed! |

I'm pretty sure I did do that.
Unless I'm forgetting something, the only way to screw on the bottom part that vents out by the trans is to install the triangle second. |

After mine was put together, I sealed it with a bead of clear RTV silicone (with a calking gun) It has held up perfectly for years.
Make sure the electrical connection for the OP sender is really on there solidly, because once the engine is in, it's going to be a tough reach.
By the way, I like your avatar; very appropriate for a VW guy...a caged nut.
Good luck, Mondshine |
