Use what you want. I just was trying to help. Most just do what they know. .You missed the point, 58-64 are small window cars. 65-ON ARE BIG WINDOW CARS. So the aftermarket unit would have the correct arms for a small window car,it would look out of place to use the big window arms and blades. Use it in a big window car is OK Aftermarket shafts are just like the aftermarket arms and blades. You can get real German units just like the aftermarket in good used condition for low cost. Come to my shop with your car that has the aftermarket stuff I would gladly show you the difference in aftermarket and German. DL

Just so you know the small window cars parked the the passenger side
The big window cars all parked to the drivers side. |

| So I have a 64 and same deal, 12 volt system 6 volt wiper motor. I bought a two speed 67 motor. Direct fit no mods neccesary. Then I bought a two speed switch from chirco.com. Took about a month to get the switch in the mail but was worth the wait. Many people will say that the park position is different but mine was the same. Just had to bolt new motor on and wiring to the new switch. Easy! |

| By the way the switch from chirco was German and a direct fit for my 64. Just screwed my old knob on the new switch |

Right on! The switch is pt# 111-955-517 it is the 67 bug and 68-71 bus used the same and the escutcheon is the same as the old 1 speed and the knob fits.
The bus ones cost less than the 67 bug LOL!
All motors park in the direction the terminals point when mounted on the frame. Except the 54-57 oval left hand drive |

| Also it took me a few to figure out the wiring any one needing a drawing just say the word. I did use the archive on the site but still struggled a bit. |

| Just FYI most switches have numbers that match up to the same on the motors. |

| Ur right they do but the switch for whatever reason had a 51 51a and 51b and the motor had a 51a and 51b but no 51. Or something to that affect. It was a few months ago. And my wiring was not stock color codes. It could have been me but Anyways. |

In my '65 I used a '69 two speed motor and a '67 switch.
The conversion was easy, just had to re-wire the motor to the switch since the switches changed sides in '68. |

| I did not know the switches changed sides on the 68 bug? LOL! Your 65 and the 68 should be the same location on the switch in your dash. And the way the motor mounts to the frame is the same as the 68. As you are using it in a 65 and the switch for the 67 and the 68 are not the same type, one uses a rubber knob and the 67 uses a knob like all the early cars.DL West-Wiperguy |

| I tried to use the original wiring from the '69 motor, but it did not reach the '67 switch, it was too short. Thought they might have changed the layout. My bad. |

I am just doing this to my '63 beetle as I put it back together. I have a 12 volt two speed motor from a later beetle and have used a light switch from a 1967 beetle to get the two positions for slow and fast.

What a great idea! First time I heard anyone do this.
I love it when stuff like this falls into my lap.
You have used it and it does work, is that right?
Thanks for the brain power. _________________ '66 Beetle

Well it works on the bench. Terminal 56 on the light switch was for the headlights so that will easily take the motor load but I'm unsure wether 57 is the same size terminal without pulling the switch apart. The proof will be in another 40 years time if it is still working. I also noticed that terminal 31b on the wipers will give a complete cycle of the wipers if it gets a momentary +12V signal, so would be handy if you just wanted to do one sweep and could easily be modified to run with an intermittent time delay if you had a three position wiper switch. _________________ 1961 unrestored Beetle - 1966 VW Baja project - http://www.youtube.com/user/wiredkiwi |

| Digging this thread up. I am working on my 62, and have no wipers at all. I bought a used 2 speed 12 volt from a 67. I am aware that the spacing of the holes in the cowl is off a little bit, so the new wiper frame won't fit. Also, I would like to run the stock 62 arms and blades. Is my solution as simple as finding a 62 wiper assembly, and installing the 67 motor on it? If so what other years will work? |

| YES use a 58-64 frame and linkage with the 67 motor on it. |

| Thanks for the direct answer. Lots of other talk about drilling holes, or using the incorrect wiper arms, I'm not interested in doing that. Just for future reference, what year 2 speed, 12 volt motors will fit the 58 to 64 wiper motor frame? Seems to be the no brain answer for 12 volt conversions. |

| Any 67-68 12 volt 2 speed swf motor can be used, but you will have to swap the drive gear plate and out put from your 6 volt motor,if you use the 68 motor. The units only difference are the shaft spacing and all small window cars parked the arms to the passenger side of the glass. All big window cars parked the arms to the drivers side of the glass. So the motors bolt to the frames 180 degrees of each other. Early cars motors point the terminals when mounted to the frame to the passenger side. Later cars motors point the terminals when mounted to the frame to the drivers side. DL |

I got the 67 motor mounted in the 62 frame. The motor bolted up no problem. The arm that connects the motor to the frame needs to be modified if you don't swap the 12 volt motor to the 6 volt drive gear and motor bottom. I welded a washer to the motor end of the arm where the bushing pops in, and then drilled the hole larger to accept the larger 67 bushing. You might not need to weld the washer on, but the metal was a bit thin by itself after drilling the hole larger.
Comparison of the early and late frames
Early arm and bushing vs late
washer welded on, yes grind the welds down
Back side
Notice that the motor mount holes are 180 degrees different early vs late, that's why the wipers park on opposite sides.
Finished. 12 volt 2 speed in a 6 volt car with german parts, plus a washer.
