Don't sweat it Glenn. Its so funny that they comment that "less than 1/3 of 1% of the total membership" disagreed with the Trustee's decisions. Next think you know they fired the two moderators that voiced their OPINION, and put in place the guy who has their biggest supporter (who by the way went away for awhile because he wasn't happy that Barry used to moderate him!). If its such a small deal, then why such a severe reaction?

Hypocrites!

Agreed. But putting Cliff on was way overboard and flies in the face of everything they SHOULD stand for. Cliff is a good guy - as I said before he really helped me out, but this last issue just soured me completely. Whatever. I'm sure they will kick me out too for speaking up.

Glenn, Barry, Kevin and Mark: sincere thanks for your efforts on behalf of 356 Registry members that cared about the direction of the club.

When the 356 Registry finally created a forum to replace the old list, for the first time it felt like progress for the club. I joined in '96 and while the magazine is nice,
web support from my 911 pals was much more useful. It started out great, but there were moments when the new 356 forum was less than thoughtful. Like other people searching for engines or transmissions original to their cars, asking for a "lost & found" sticky was a frustrating excercise... I eventually gave up after the absurdity of tone that thread took. Left to hang out with Porsche enthusiasts that gave a shit, and said as much. That was a few years ago, but I maintained my membership and continued to receive the magazine. When they redesigned the site, I was never notified. Imagine my surprise last year when I tried to sign on
and was told I was no longer a member. What?!? Took them two weeks for to straighten out my long-paid status. Finally, I get to sign on and discover that not
only is the new format awful and the classifieds impossibly so, my previous forum activity was gone. Hundreds of posts vanished, wiped clean during the switch.
Contributions to parts and assembly details, photo galleries, everything. Even the original post requesting my car's engine case.

That pissed me off even more. The current move by the board doesn't surprise me. Looks like the alienation will continue.
So I'm letting my membership lapse, and will hang out where enthusiasts care.

Thanks guys... and thank you Everett B! I'd rather donate $$ here. Very Happy

Agreed.

Brian brought me in when they switched from a list server to a forum. Since I was a moderator on the Samba, he wanted to run things by me since the Samba was well run. He introduced me to Barry. Take a look at the "rules" on 356Talk, they are based on the Samba rules.

Things were looking good for a year, but they are much more "button down shirt" and the Samba is more filthy and greasy tee shirt.

I'll be sure to be vocal the next time there are elections. Hell, maybe i'll run for the board.

Thanks,

If it wasn't for Barry, The Registry might very well still be on an email list. He handled the politics and I did the programming for a forum/email list combo. It was ridiculously complicated but was needed to keep about 40 people happy. (some fraction of 1% LOL)

There seems to have been a lot of discussion behind closed doors the last week that we are just finding out about today.

It will be interesting when the forum database crashes, who they're gonna call.

I cleared that with Everett. (just so no one thinks it was stolen)

Everett has also helped out with a few server issues I had to deal with over the years... for Free I might add. So Thanks to Everett too.

The reaction of the trustees to 'kill' the discussion by locking the topic in which there was debate about the decision whether it is a good idea to block non members from participating in the forum and silencing the moderators with a different view reminds me of a night in which long knives played a role...

Never meant to imply. Yes, Ev has helped many admins, even my local forum a few weeks ago.

For those who don't know, Brian was put through a wringer in making the switch from the listserv format to a forum. His work on the software was extraordinary and I'm sorry to admit I share some of the blame for any difficulty he experienced. I was one of those concerned about the 40 or so - well, Brian, since I stayed as a moderator for the first month I assure you from the barrage of emails and even phone calls directed at me complaining about the switch it seemed like a lot more. Very Happy They blamed me and I was lukewarm at most about the switch as I'm sure Barry and Brian recall.

My main concern was making sure that the highly valuable technical guys who actually knew how to make our 356s work (Al Zim, Ron LaDow, Joe Leoni, Allan Klingen, Ab Tiedeman, Brad Ripley, Jim Brezeale, etc etc ), would stay with us, and hence I backed some of them when they wanted to continue to receive emails - a HUGE problem Brian solved for which he has never been thanked enough. So, Brian, thanks again (and thanks for the kind words here).

For the first month or so of the "new" forum back in 2008 I stayed as a moderator and Barry joined me. He also was tremendously helpful to the club especially and to me personally. During that month or so helping members adjust and answering questions was a full time (actually more) job for me. Then I received a unilateral demand from the head Trusty to do something that I thought was simply wrong and that was an unwarranted interference with the more mundane aspects of my "job." Rather than disobey a direct order, and that is what it was, simply an edict, I quit forthwith. Barry stepped in, put up with the ensuing BS and did a great job. I don't necessarily agree with how he did things in every respect but appreciate beyond words the work he did in a thankless task.

I called the job "herding methamphetamine addicted kittens through a fish store infested with mice." (I confess I have NEVER missed having to deal with Charles, Charlie, Cliff and the other problem children for whom no discussion could remain civil and apolitical, but, for the most part I made quite a few friends). Barry and Glenn, who came along much later, dealt with those same kittens after crack was added to their diets. Thanks much you guys.

On a positive (albeit off topic) note, an idea unashamedly stolen from the Registry, Drive Your Woodie Day, has been tremendously successful and will happen again this Saturday, May 19. Look for one in your neighborhood.

Damn! I took an afternoon nap and wake up to find Glen and Barry have been fired! WTF -- then I see who replaced them and -- WTF2, YGBFKM! I was hoping the leadership would pay attention and reverse an absurd policy--but I guess I gave them too much credit.

Thanks Barry and Glenn for being fair and reasonable and for all the hard work on behalf of folks that love funny little air-cooled cars. We really appreciated your efforts and sense of humor. Barry I hope you are a member here--I just joined after years of lurking.

PostPosted: Tue May 15, 2012 5:16 pm    Post subject: 356 Registry Moderators Reply with quote

FYI, Bill Sampson posted a well written thread regarding the Porsche 356 Trustee's decision to "dismiss" (or whatever) three forum moderators.

Minutes after that posting was made... it was deleted by the new moderator (or other person with administrative rights).

So.. I posted the following on the Registry's forum (it will no doubt be removed... so I'm posting it here on the "Open & Free" Samba 3546 forum):

I noticed that Bill Sampson posted a thread in response to George Dunn's announcement that we have new moderators for this forum. Apparently, three guys were released (or dismissed... or whatever). OK... they didn't say that they dismissed them... but they are being replaced, in any event.

Well... they quickly deleted Bill's posting. How convenient. Is the message that no member can express an opinion not in line with the Trustee's stated policies?

So, Barry Brisco, Glenn Ring and Brian Kelly have all been "relieved" of their duties, one way or the other.

How dare any of those guys voice an opinion not in line with the Trustee's misguided decision to close the forum to non-members? What were they thinking?

This turn of events saddens me greatly. Members cannot express concerns about the decisions of the club's leaders?

Instead of a welcoming, open organization... we are now a "pay for play" group. Never mind that you'd like to chat a bit with current members before deciding to join the club: now, pay your $ and take your chances.

If you are going to volunteer as a moderator on this forum, you better be ready to drink the Koolaid and NEVER voice any personal opinion not in line with the Trustee's stated policies.

This is America? How sad.

Just my opinion. Since I am not a moderator, I don't suppose I can be fired for expressing that opinion. But... wait! I just realized that I can be fired as a member. Yes... as a member.

A provision in our by-laws: "Any member may be suspended by a two-thirds vote of the Trustees for infractions of the 356 Registry rules or regulations or for action inimical to the general objectives or best interests of the 356 Registry."

Yes.. that means any 356 Registry Member who expresses an opinion contrary to the expressed policies of the Trustees... can be kicked out of the club. So, I am supposed to never express a genuine concern regarding their actions? What happened to "freedom of speech?"

Think about that the next time you are asked to respond to an opinion survey on this site. Or, when you pen a new posting to the forum. Apparently it is a "get in line" or "get out" situation now.

How sad, indeed.

Regards,

Bill
