I can't quite figure this out, they reported that he died from his injuries after hitting a SAFTEY FENCE. Somebody needs to check that out, and improve it.

The safety comes in for the spectators behind the safety fence. It does sound rather ironic, though.

In Poland they use rather sophisticated air fences to protect the riders, but safety fences cannot protect against any conceivable impact. I'll point out that many riders have died while wearing "safety helmets."
Speedway racing isn't noted for being terribly dangerous, though. Despite the name, track lengths are a quarter mile or less and speeds on the straights are in the 70MPH range, with turns being considerably slower. |
