Been working on my 1961 Double Cab lately.
Installed rebuilt transmission, reassembled the rear end stuff.
Replaced heater baffles and tubes with good used parts.
Re-installed engine
Scrubbed and polished SWR paint
Yesterday I got it off non-op and got current tags so today, first test drive with rebuilt transmission, etc.:
My high/low switch was cutting out and getting HOT so I replaced that with a good used unit:
Also new clutch pedal seal and pedal pad
Removed headlight switch to check it for resistance too but it was fine.
Horn not working, disassembled, cleaned it up, filed points, adjusted tone screw until it got loud again:
(Yes, front end is super greasy)
Replaced the 2 outer pop-out window seals:
Passenger side has this spacer but driver's side does not:
Each pop-out window has one Turkis screw - that is weird...
Maybe I got the noob pop-out window guy who dropped all his SWR screws and had to make do?
Rebuilt a fuel tap and installed it.
Unfortunately it started seeping a little:
I think I got the double-threaded nut in a bad position, too far toward the tap, so today I removed it, replaced the seals and the sock just in case, and tried again:
Hopefully it's good now. _________________ How to: Post Photos | Search

Niceee Double Cab!
I wish I had spent more time with my (now dead) Double Cab vetting it in before trying to drive it home. Fixed about 10 things but the 11th one probably got me _________________ 57 PGSG 'Carpet Bus'

So, after blowing my horn about my newly refurbished metric speedo head - the odometer stops turning at after 8km. NUTS. Thats my luck. Speedo needle still works, have to pull it out and check the gears and see whats up.
I also replaced the drag link and adjusted / greased the steering box. Steers smooth as butter now. _________________ Make sure you disconnect the battery charger before starting to weld. |

Tuesday...Getting prepped for the CTS trip. Installed last pop-out window. Installed old junk driver's door window assembly in case of rain. Installed old junk passenger door window frame for garbage bag wrap in case of rain. Plumbed the carb filters for breather hose. Installed new go-fast stickers. Installed NAPA 10mm zirc fitting in the steering box and greased same with John Deer Corn Head Grease.
* Notes to self and all *
1 - If you go over one tube of grease your steering box was not dry or empty.
2 - Grease does not come out anywhere on the steering box like it would on front beam seals if it is full.
3 - When you get to 2 tubes and are like...wholly sh#$ this is a lot of grease and my arms are tired and check the steering wheel for SMOOTHness you will find...***wait for it***
grease flowing out of the top of your wheel, horn button, and turn signal indicator assembly and have a big fu#$ing mess to clean up. End of PSA.
Hope everyone got a good what a moron laugh out of that last one...I sure did
Yesterday -
Drove into North Carolina. Longest bus trip yet. Installed Cargo Door Seals.
EDIT**Forgot to mention...added a temporarily mounted 12V plug for the trip. _________________

Sorry for the mess w/that grease job,but I couldn't help myself by chuckling when I read that.
As for myself,I'm finishing the paint stripping on the inside of the singlecab gates.
Did I mention,I f@#cking hate dropgates? What a PITA! _________________ Defying conventional wisdom since 1970 |

When I installed the corn head grease I used most of one tube. I stopped when I had a small amount of water and old gear oil drain from the horn wire hole.
I too packed for CTS today. Finished installing my safari brackets, installed license plate light, and a 12v accessory plug. Bolted down my Westy bed, checked the tranny fluid, etc. |

I started laughing to myself when you got to the second tube, with a suspicion of what was happening. I was right. Sorry about your mess, though your steering should be ultimately smooth now. _________________

^^^ Looks great, but are you really working on a dirt floor in a room full of garbage? _________________

I am until the bus is rolling. It's my free inclosed storage location.
Used to be a chicken house. It is all raw dirt, no SH#T.. I hate laying and working in there. Will be better next week when it comes to my house..
You know what they say one man's trash another man's...
I've had 30 splitty's in that chicken house at one time. Now down to 12..

Awesome, no need to spend money on a hotel room. Or were you Chaperone / Limo driver / party pooper for the night? _________________

Sunday, May 20th, 2012 ~ Chico, CA.
Here's our baby; "The Toaster" (1967 Westfalia) being loaded up to be brought to Skinner Classics
[ http://www.skinnerclassics.com/ ] in Vacaville, California to have the roof rust addressed.
Since we're doing projects as we can...
Check-off list:
Engine; check.
Transmission; check.
Electrical System; check.
Brakes; check.
Now it's time, as we have money and opportunity, to start getting cosmetic concerns addressed, and the rust on the roof is the biggest.
Can't wait to see "The Toaster" after Robert and his team have worked with it.

I was at CTS and Farmington this weekend and was reminded of a great idea I had seen at the past couple events I had been to. Brad (sorry IDK his user name here) had been sporting an old suitcase turned into a stereo setup. Since I had gone almost insane on the 10 hour drive up to the show by myself I decided to get on it and build one before my trip back.
1st - I started by hitting the local Antique Mall and found this patina'd gem for $26.00. Only downside was that it smelled like ass. That was cool because I trimmed out most of the liner (and smell) for the conversion.
2nd - I hit the local Best Buy and bought one of the cheapest head units they had that still had an EQ and aux in. For a few bucks more I could have had rear aux in and usb in, but that wasn't that important on this one. I also picked up the cheapest set of speakers that appeared decent (material and hrtz. wise), and a female cigarette type plug. About $120.00 total.
3rd - Hit the local Radio Shack and picked up a male cigarette type plug. I should note that I am not happy with the types of plugs I bought. As of the completion I just have a hole drilled in the side with the plugs coming out to hook up. I will be sourcing some flush mount type and retractible cord types at a later time. This was just to get up and running quick.
4th - Finished up with some cutting and wiring. I have a male and female plug so I can power the system and plug my phone or other accesory in at the same time. I may experiment with different cable (ie usb, etc) to clean it up a bit as time permits.
It is not audiophile sound, but it is not horrible by any means. I am sure sound quality would increase with more expensive speakers and head unit choices and some dynomat, poly-fill, fiber-fill, sealing of the case..blah-blah-blah. That being said it sounds better than other stereos I have had in cars in the past. All in all I have about $150.00 to $160.00 in this. With a little forethought and frugality I'm sure you could be in it for $100.00 or less.
PS...Thanks to Brad for the idea. Now I will have less of a chance going insane on the way back. _________________
