HUGE improvement. HUGE. That rat-rod street fighter look is cool, but there's nothin like an old bug with shinin paint picking up the lights at night. THAT'S what I'm talkin about! Show some pride in your ride, throw a Sewfine interior in there and hit the shows, score some trophies. Yeah! Lookin good, bro.

Sorry to let you down, bro, but shiney paint and this bug are like oil and water. HAHA
Here's the twist I was talking about:

I may rip off your "gravel guard" idea Toemas. The "new" fenders that are going on the fasty have a bit of rust on them. _________________ Type 3 Fasty

I'm not sure what to read into that, but either way I'm glad it was at least a surprise.
Most people hate it, and are quick to tell me so! haha! I love it, mostly because the body of this car is somewhat rough, from all the years of abuse. Instead of focusing my time on trying to make it nice right now, I just wanted to do something that would embrace the roughness until I have the means to rip the body off the pan and paint it right.
One day I was daydreaming about how sweet it would be to discover a barn-find 60s or 70s race car. So that's exactly what I am creating with this paint job. I'm still not done... there are a few more elements I still need to paint on (gumballs!), and I still need to blend down the faux-tina a little better. But all in all, this is it.

Just having a little fun. Don't worry, nothing is permanent.
One thing that is for sure though, a Sewfine kit will not be finding its way onto this car anytime soon! I've got some tattered original grey and white two tone panels which I am re-skinning onto fresh backing boards.

Looks good, nice job. How did you get the strip detail in the rag?
Thanks man!
I just spraypainted it. I held the can away about a foot and a half, and misted paint onto the canvas. After those pictures were taken, I took a green scotch brite pad and scuffed down the paint a bit so that the loose stuff all came off. I leaned into it a bit in some spots so that it'd get the weathered look. SEM makes flexible spray paint which is intended for vinyl interiors and carpet, and that should look really well on cars where the intention is for it to look good.

Hey man, its your car so who gives a flip weather or not "I" like it , and I wasn't slamming you, just genuinely surprised . I like the idea and the execution is great, just not a green and black fan but its growing on me. _________________ '59 1500sp Ra Jay

i was going for a vintage racer look too, how did you do the faux patina?
Thanks! first I scuffed down the black paint, then applied a few new coats of black wherever I intended for black to show through. Next, I painted the green, then painted the stripe. (There's a trick to keeping the stripe straight, juat let me know if you wang to know more and i'll photo that process)
After that, I just took 320 grit and softly wet sanded where I wanted the black showing, without using a sanding block. I just looked at pictures of patina cars to get an idea of where it should look worn. But now, after seeing pictures of my car, I see a few spots that need a little more attention.
That's where it sits now, but I still intend to hit it with some rubbing compound on a buffer. I want more translucent green areas, so that the black fades out less abruptly. That will happen after I get the gum balls with numbers, and sponsor logo on there. _________________ -Thomas

I mostly lurk, but I have to say that this, well...this. kicks. ass. Gives me some ideas for my 59 ghia project, especially with the recent paint work. My dad was a Formula Vee racer back in the day, and the motor for the ghia is one of his old autocross motors...seems kinda fitting...thanks for the inspiration man, seriously. _________________ got two H2O, but gasping for air...
OK, that explains it, it looked real good, then it looked... old. I was afraid you were gonna say you found a flux capacitor or some BS. You know it's not nice to fool old people.

i'd definitely be interested on how to keep the paint straight for the stripes... i've been toying with the idea of decals...
