Ask and you shall recieve.........read the thread from the begining sportin-wood and you will be taken back to the LA 80's VW scene.
Ray's Lil Dreamer was my inspiration to build faster VW''s and I'm sure a lot of other kids in Latino LA neighborhoods. |
Great job vwkidd! That's the one! My brother was good friends with Ray. I'll make time to go through this thread from page 1...it'll take a while! _________________ .

Club47 on Whittier Blvd, Ukranian Hall on Melrose, Alexandria Hotel downtown LA, Hong Kong Cafe Chinatown, Visage across from Quiet Cannon, Red Onion West Covina!!!! All the hot spots for us LA Disco Biscuits!!
Check this story at the Ukranian Hall. One of the few nights I was actually not cruising one of my VDubs & a bunch of us from Huntington Park rolled to Ukranian Hall to dance & party. The Ukrainian Hall is right next to LA City College so there was always action going on. Well that night we were waiting to get in the club out front and some chingazos went down at the parking lot of the college and there was some gunshots and a bunch of heads running in all directions and this little red MG slammed to the floor was peeling out of the lot while some guy was running after it shooting. we all hit the floor and after the commotion died down a guy that was in line at the end was like in a state of shock & looking disoriented because he was staring down his light colored shirt (i remember like it was yesterday his look on his face) covered in blood. The poor innocent guy was a random victim that night.......needless to say we didnt stick around to find out what happened to him.. _________________ 1955 151 Deluxe L219 Congo Green (Project)

Don't know?? We bailed out the opposite direction towards the Hollywood frwy where we had parked our cars. I think the guy survived because he looked in shock & not in pain.....maybe no vital organs were hit & the light colored shirt made the blood stand out. Back then growing up in my neighborhood we learned early on if something went down and you weren't involved you "walk away" and don't look back. _________________ 1955 151 Deluxe L219 Congo Green (Project)

Hey kidd, clubing in L.A. nightly was like running a gauntlet. There is all kinds of crazy stories I cant post on here but one you'll reminesce on was that drive back home to H.P late at night from the clubs. The Visage used to be off the 60fwy and Garfield across the street from the Golf Course. Atop the golf course was the 21 over club. After both clubs got out the CHP used to set-up checkpoints at the 60 onramp west for us desmadrosos from L.A. To avoid those you had to go a long stretch south into Montebello. If you made it through there you had to go thru the long stretches up Santa Fe thru the City of Vernon or Florence thru Bell. Remember the relief you felt once you got home. Brother! I know that drive well going down Sante Fe or Soto through Vernon passing the smelly Farmer John factory. At night Vernon is a ghost town all factorys and only busy during the day. I used to love the sounds of my 48IDA's echoing off the factory walls and making that trip back home after a night of partying......hitting Sante Fe & Mortimer low profile, making a right at El Ranchito's restaurant. to my home........and doing it all again the next day!! _________________ 1955 151 Deluxe L219 Congo Green (Project)

The police back then could tell the trouble makers from everyone else just by looking at the way the car was set up. The cars they would target were VWs, giant 4x4s mini trucks and sport bikes. Not to many small imports then. _________________ CRG

Very few imports back then. 510s with prelude seats and a few rx3s were the small import of the day. Having a VW slammed and being out late at night which just about everyone did put a big target on your back. That late-night drive back to Huntington Park when I was staying up there for awhile was H-A-I-R-R-R-Y. Survived it unscathed with only a few close calls but I know alot of heads that didnt. _________________ Frank Ochoa said; "I still have my convertible bug from high school. A while back I was talking to some heads about those days and one of my friends I grew up with told me he was amazed that I made it home every night when I would stay out late all over L. A.

growing up around 7 yrs old or so I would hear the crazy stories from my oldest brother and his friends of Stadium way, Tommys, Circus, Sunset blvd, Elysian park, Whittier blvd etc. and i couldnt wait to get out there and experience it for myself. I wasnt about to miss out!! Its like that George Lopez joke when he says he decided to not go to some party and the next day he was told of what happened and he says " I know I shoulda gone, F##&&*K!!!" _________________ Frank Ochoa said; "I still have my convertible bug from high school. CRG & J8bug for sure the Vdubs had a target on it's back....either for the Cops, or getting jacked, or pissing off some gang bangers cause we would always get the hiena's out cruising............J8bug speaking of the only small imports were the 510's (slow), but the Mazda Wankel engined RX3 were the ones that gave us Vdubs a run for the money. The only time a lost a "money on the line" street race was to a grey primered with black primered spots (painted to look like a dog). my drivetrain was in a grey primered Oval that my friend owned, close ratio geared trans a 2 liter set-up with NOs ( it wasn't plumbed on this car since it wasn't mine). Well this RX3 belonged to my friend Ramsey younger sister's boyfriend also from H.P.......this race was anticipated by everyone in HP cause rumor had it that the RX3 was looking to beat "VWKidd".......so we all rolled out to a long stretch of road in Vernon by the Farmer Johns off of Soto called Eastern. There was around 10 cars all full of heads. Anyway we ran heads up & I easly got the hole shot off the line and banged through 1-2-3-than 4th and was leading by about 3 car lenghts but when this Mazda caught it's power curve at the top end & I could hear the RPM's just peaking and peaking right past me, crossing the marked off end by at least 2 cars & beating me I had to see what he was running. He wouldn't let me check his motor which is undrestandable in the street race game, but my sources come to find out later he was running a 750 Holley double pumper manual secondarys on NOs!!! with a racing beat tune!! Lesson learned never underestimate the opponent...especially the beater looking cars & Vdubs!!! _________________ 1955 151 Deluxe L219 Congo Green (Project)

They used to sound sweet too. There were a few chanates rolling around in those in my neck of the woods. You would hear them raising hell from time to time. If you heard of a race with an RX3s in it, the excitement and anticipation level was amplified big time!!!
Rx2 The feared Rx3> 510>
Before bugs blew up in the early 80s, these were everywhere...
