They make aftermarket speedo that uses a tone ring on your cv joint. Or the gps ones like above. If you are using stock spindles you could go stock. For me, i have a 60 dollar e-Trax gps, mounted in a 15 dollar billet alum holder, with a 8 dollar power cord hard wired in. It was the cheapest way i could find, plus it alows me to put in 15 way points to find camp. It has a speedo screen with a fake needle, that displays a numerical value above it. Crappy part is sometimes takes 10 minutes to locate satalites!

Almost any speedo...

http://www.egauges.com/eg_typeI.asp?Type=Speedomet...p;Manf=All

Works with MOST electronic (programmable) speedometers...

http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS+Performance+Products/555/41612/10002/-1

OR as other mention any inexpensive GPS unit ....

Recently speedo in Chevy PU died ... Stuck old GPS unit of mine to windshield.... Works fine.... More accurate than (stock) dash unit because it does not depend on tire size for accuracy...

IF you are off road, then you will not get any bad looks from the law which might not particularly like GPS... And if you get lost all you have to do is back track map route in GPS of if you were thoughful at first and waymarked camp.... Suggest a hand held (in accessory mount) so you can remove it and geocache or what eve also ...

I was thinking about the old school gauge that connects to the front left tire. Didn't think about the GPS option, but now when you bring it up, thats not a bad idea.
Failproof - I dont want to wait 10 mins for satelite to locate.
I'm looking for something reliable. Combining maps with it can really help. IS there a subscription for map updates with the garmin?

Cheapest is a simple GPS unit, but it is a pain putting it on and off to prevent theft... I'm now running this:

http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=...prd292.htm

....with their SEN-01-4160 sensor setup:

http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=...prd109.htm

I already had the sensor left over from a Gear Vendors Overdrive kit on another car, the stock VW speedo cable fit right in it, all I had to do was change the end of the speedo cable from the metric nut that was on it to one that fit the sensor (made it by welding a washer on the back of a nut Smile )...works flawlessly and doesn't look like anything worth stealing...

I went thru all the hoops when I was trying to set up my streeter sand rail. Spent a lot of time looking, plannin' and sceaming. Finally I just bought an extra suction cup mount and stuck on the Garmin NUVI, that I use in the truck, and it works like a champ. Plugs right in to the "hog lite" socket. Battery life is more than 4 hours, so not a big deal to change back and forth, in the woods.

When I heal up a little bit, financially, from the build, I'm gonna buy one of the new Garmin NUVI's designed to be used on motorcycles. It has all the features of the 3 X 5 screen, with a brighter, easier to read in the sun, display. I've seen them on Evil Bay, well under $200.00. I missed one @ $96.00...

Jay,
It does a total mileage count. (with trip odometer) That seemed to satisfy my insurance guy. (He's been my broker for over 30 years)

Here in florida, DMV does not require an odometer on vehicles over 10 years old. There is a block to check , concerning odometer reading, on the title and on the, state supplied, bill of sale. Many "bill of sale" states do the same thing. Floriduh requires dealers to verify indicated mileage, prior to transfer but private sales are exempt. if the odometer is broken, wiped (digital) or otherwise non functional, just check the box, everybody winks and the transfer goes thru...

We have what's known as a "street rod" title, as well as "antique" plates here. They both have added restrictions, as well as the insurance companie's piling on all manner of silly rules and restrictions.

I carry "liability only" insurance, ( on all my road vehicles) because collision was very expensive, and likely woulden't pay out anyway in the event of an accident. (all my rolling stock is 15 years old or older) I even kept tags on my "door slammer" bracket racer so I could "test hop" it and park it on the street without any hassles.

My rail had antique plates on it when I bought it, (I think because the fee is much lower) but I changed back to standard tags just to simplify the process. (made my insurance broker MUCH happier)

I am looking for one that will include some topographic maps (I dont need street names and directions as my rail is used exclusively off road).
Seems like Nuvi 500 or Nuvi 550 are the only garmins for off road purposes.

My NUVI has topo maps already loaded and will change back and forth between street and topo with one touch. If I drive past the end of the road, it will still show water, some state and county roads, as well as power line right of ways.

Mine shows most roads in several wildlife management areas I hunt and camp in. In topo mode, it will "snail trail" making it a cinch to find camp in the dark. (when I remember to "waypoint" camp, that is)
