Anyone else believe that lowering a bus is silly? I'm not saying that many lowered VW's out there don't look awesome. But...
In terms of practicality and safety it's just plain foolish.
Bad enough a late model bus has barely 6inches of crumple zone in the front -- that's on the '73 later later where V-forked portions are attached to the front frame rails on each side. And the old splitties, cool as they are, have virtually no deformable area in from of the driver. By lowering the bus, and bumper/frame will submarine under most other vehicles in a head-on collison, making it even more perilous.
The narrowed beam contribute further instability to an already highly unstable vehicle.
Nothing against those of you who've lowered your buses. Just want to state some facts regarding possible consequences. Surely, we can all have the "when it's my time, it's my time" attitude, but we can all do things which potentially increase or decrease our chances of survival. |

im mixed on this subject. i do like the look of some of the lowered buses ive seen. but ive driven a bay with an adjustable beam and it rode LIKE CRAP!!! and it wasnt even lowered all the way, maybe 2/3 of the way down. i dont know how people ride in them. especially a bay window, they ride sooo good stock. |

This has been hashed out a thousand times. To each is own. I like them lowered, stock or even lifted. With that I see this thread locked in 3...2...1.... _________________ Formerly known in the forums as "OVALTEEN"

Im more interested in knowing - what set you off enough to want to start this thread?
There's hundreds of posts here in the forums about it already, so you either wanted to start a new thread to get more attention to your post (so you could vent after whatever set you off on the subject) or haven't yet mastered how to use thesamba properly - which I do believe is silly given that there is a lowering thread right in the stickies to avoid this type of feedback fodder. |

Thnx for the input guys. Just wanted to address some concerns/get some feedback centering around lowered buses.
For those who wandered off topic, yeah, yes the avatar is real. Just a smaller version of my FB and Youtube stuff. |

Jersey Shore-in' it!
Some buses I like the lowered look; some I don't. I've never riden or driven in one so I can't comment on handling and safety, etc. _________________ '76 Deluxe Campmobile |

Umm, excuse me. My Bus is a very stable vehicle, especially for one with 1-ton capacity and great ground clearance. _________________ '71 Westy |

Yes you are right. Lowered busses are dumb. People who lower them are idiots. We should crush them all like the peons they are and throw their crappy unsafe cars into the crusher. Who do they think they are? They act like building their VW's to suit their personal taste is something that they are entitled to. Dont they know that the 6 inch crumple zone is an impenetrable barrier that will protect their worthless lives in a head on collision every time, particularly with all these big SUV's on the road? I mean come on guys, what is wrong with you?
Jeeze. Im off to go lift some weights and live my high and mightly lifstyle. Bashing others is a waste of my precious time, for which I have plenty because I have a stock height bus. |

Brilliant. Thanks Kirk, problem solved. Those are some fine lookin' buses!

Admittedly, when driving long distances in either one in the summer, I sometimes partially disrobe as well. _________________ MAKE FORUMS GREAT AGAIN

I do that just so people don't ask me for rides.

I've had an attitude problem against lowered cars/trucks since I first started noticing them in the early 1990s. There were way too many emerald green-flake paint Nissan trucks, slammed, with tonneau covers and blacked out windows, chrome spoke wheels, pumping Dr. Dre, with a bunch of annoying little B-boy wannabees and nothing could have irked me more. So I hated lowered vehicles. Especially growing up where off-roading was a regular pass-time (I had a baja bug at this time). It was rednecks VS gangstas and everybody hated each other. Lift kits VS drop kits. Stupid, pointless divisive tribalism.
Anybody else have all those mental problems? Or is this a more practical conversation about how your ride looks VS how it feels?
Either way, I'm a little older and a little wiser now. I'm over it. I can dig it either way. And lowering has a long tradition even in the American Steel hot rod set. So no need for culture wars over it.
So after all that.... I walk out of the office and this is what I see every day. This is why I've ordered drop spindles and I CAN'T WAIT to get them so my bus no longer looks like it's giving itself a hernia, trying to wheelie while it sits motionless in a parking lot.
Consider this the BEFORE picture. As soon as Wagens West ships my spindles (should be any day now), I'll be happy to share the AFTER pics as well as some process.
