i have to agree that i like that look. the whole thing looks clean as well.
my car has enough rust and crappy "repairs" done that i don't think i can afford to restore my super. was thinking a sort of baja look... but the lack of any front fenders had me considering a similar move to what you have here. it certainly is thought provoking to say the least.
i'm looking forward to see the paint work. |

| Looks to me like your taking something that would have been scrapped and turning it into an amazing car. Great looking volksrod and very tasteful (so far)! You've got some great skills. I, like others, are waiting to see what else you do. |

thanks guys nice to hear the kind words, To answer a couple of questions:
The speaker housings under the dash are simple sheet metal cut bent and fitted into the corners, welded, filled and painted, the carpet will need to be adjusted around them.
The steering is a couple of steps. you need two u-joints and a long piece of splined shaft like these on pages 312/313.(http://www.empius.com/vwcatalog/2011/312.html http://www.empius.com/vwcatalog/2011/313.html)
My 70 had 5/8" shaft. measure yours, before purchasing parts. Take the splined female part off the steering box and undo the "rubber coupler" Cut the steering column just above the the crash tube, section that looks like mesh. This will leave it as a hollow tube. Drill a couple holes through the tube a inch or so above the cut, Cut a segment of the splined shaft, the splines will be used with one new u-joint, the other side gets slid up the steering column, and plug welded through the holes and a weld along the end of the tube. this finishes the steering column side.
The other u-joint gets one side cut off and welded to the female coupling which was on the steering box. These parts need to be aligned through the centerline of the coupler and u-joint. other wise it will look funcky when it is being turned. and not really work properly.
the remaining segment of the purchased shaft gets cut to fit between the u joints and then welded to the u-joints. this makes a new segment which is removable. the spline on the steering column and a spline on the steering box are fastened with the clamping bolt with the correct spline count. remember to phase the u-joints in the same oreintation.
the area where the running boards were gets a neat treatment but it will have to wait till I get to it to show you. |

So far, great job. I looks like it will turn out very nice!
I am not much of a purist so what ever suits you! I have learned some folks will not understand the reason or desire to mod a product(car, firearm or whatever) Do what you want it is yours, that is what I think!
Can't wait to see the end result! |

With those rear wheels it should really pack a punch! Hope you won't be running that single carb 1600 for long.. Are you sure the engine will be able to pull them loose from the street if parked on a hot day? _________________ 1973 1303S w sunroof

home from paint. It isn't flawless but its perfect. the color is awesome, my custom mix of charcoal even has a ever so slight tinge of green.

The front will come down a little more with a 145-15 tire on a 3-1/2" centerline, the rear are 15x 10 w/ 295-50-15 coopers.
