I have a 1991 MV (weekender - no kitchen) with 145000 miles. The body is good with a little rust in the drivers side seem. It drives really good and the engine seems to have lots of life..good torque, cruises along on the highway well.
bad stuff:
The engine is original and it leaks coolant so I guess the heads have to be done or new motor (buyer's option I guess).
Missing the linen closet.
I don't think I want to sink anymore money into it so I might sell it.
What do you guys think it's worth?
John.

In watching around Alberta $7-10k. Weird demand here. If its not 60' long and pulled by a one tone, most Albertans aren't interested. But most Albertans have money. Trick is to find someone with money that is disgusted by the idea of a fifth wheel. Maybe list it on Kijiji here and in BC?
There are a few guys at work that "want one". I will see if they are serious or just like the idea of being cool. _________________ SERENITY 1985 Vanagon GL Westfalia 1.9L wbx (Cdn. model) |

Without any pics it's a pretty hard thing to estimate. What you consider "a little rust" could turn out to be a really big job. How has the interior aged? Hows the canvas top? Does the AC really work? Have you driven it through a couple of road salt infused Alberta winters. The hatched engine is a big deal breaker.
Sight unseen as is I'd say $1500-$2000 anywhere in Canada because it's a PROJECT. _________________ 1981 Westfalia |

These may be 'eye of the beholder' issues -- but buyers' eyes tend to see the worst case scenario. |

Wow, with some normal rust, a leaking engine, 145k and missing a large interior component - estimates from $7-10k? If literally everything else were perfect I'd say maybe. Like silent tranny, recent CV replace, nice exhaust, all dash instruments and heaters work, interior is clean without rips or stains and excellent, bumpers straight. Kind of like a freak vehicle where everything's perfect but these items. But reality is a van that's driven around with some rust, something missing from the interior and the engine leaking is going to have the majority of its components in a similar state of casual maintenance. That would be a project vehicle for most because the first thing a buyer has to do is park if for a few weeks and drop $2k into the heads
Ironically I'm in the market for such a vehicle and have been looking. If there's a "we'll pay anything" mentality up in Alberta going on, I'm going to start trailering all the $3k Vanagons up there and selling them for $8k.

It is worth exactly what the new owner is willing to pay and you are willing to accept.
Multivans hold there value very well and are sought after.....especially white 4 speeds. |

Wow! Those are some really high quotes sight unseen.
In comparison, I bought my 87 Syncro for $2500.
And an 89 Westy for $3500 both within the last 3 years.
And they both had no mechanical or rust issues. Nice interiors. Westy has a couple of dings. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

$8000-$10,000? I would be surprised if it sold for that.
I had a hard time getting $8500 form my TDI westy that was in quite good shape mechanically with a freshly rebuilt transmission, although it was not all that nice cosmetically. Many here said it was worth at least $10k, and maybe it was, but I didn't ant to wait a year? for the right buyer to come along. _________________

I asked a wise man one time what a vehicle I had was worth.
His answer went like this;
"You vehicle is worth nothing until you have sold it and have the cash in hand."
Estimate opinions via the internet are about as worthless as tit's on a Bull.
Nobodies personally seen it, inspected it , driven it.
So--with all of this in mind--get what traffic will bear and wave goodbye.
My Dad told me this;
Son, there's an ass for every seat"
Ain't that the truth---
You'll just have to find that one buttox that needs the vehicle worse than you do.
Don't start the pricing too high, or you'll scare the low baller's away, which now that I'm thinking about it--isn't such a bad idea. _________________ T.K.
