If you're a man who is offended by it, you're a sensitive 90's guy who is already whipped. |

The ad agency was playing up all the angles. This ad gives a lot more credit to the woman's role in making purchasing decisions:

It is what is was in the '60's. I have a Chrysler brochure that states "Finally, car specifications that even your wife will understand."

But Chrysler was also trying to court women in the '50s:

There's a really good one that says something like "Even a woman can drive it", but I can't find it right now.
This one is sort of pro-woman yet still offensive. Kind of cool though:

The line in that one that sticks out for me is
"Does she worry about the Bomb?" Can it get more '60s than that?
I'm sure she's not worried as long as there is a desk to crawl under. _________________ All he needed was a wheel in his hand and four on the road. |

Ya know what I am offended by? All those ads on TV for anything related to cooking, laundry detergent or other household related products that are geared exclusively to women.......I am OK with tampon commercials as they are though..... _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1776.

Regarding Dustin's submission, that ad was created in 1965. Even back then I think at least 75% of the women would have thought about the hidden meaning. |

AMy one that's offended by these ads from the 50's & 60's should *not* watch Mad Men. _________________ Cheers,

Demographic marketing types manipulate people's thought processes. I always wanted to meet that handsome, rugged Marlborogh Man! Seriously the ads that bother me are not about gender but about using "beautiful people" whilst implying that "if you use this, you can look like this" or how about the 'before' and 'after' shots. 'Before' are always without make up. 'After' always have make up. Shucks I've never worn make up in my life except for black mascarra. Evolution in marketing is always going to be with us as Advertisers pay the bill! _________________ 83.5 Vanagon L Riviera Model with 97 1.9L TD AAZ 4 speed Daily Driver 3 out of 4 seasons (for sale)

I'm a woman and I own the ad the OP posted. I think it's funny. (I also have a 63 and I think that is one in the ad (or 64?).)
But if you're a girl in to cars, you probably have a thick enough skin to tolerate a little sexist marketing anyhow... _________________ --1963 Beetle euro spec "Darrel" (http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=512638)
