Hello Christian, yes I'm glad I found you and "Matilda" too, I also just wrote Marco last night to see how he is doing?

I wish I could afford to ship "Blauchen" back to Germany so I could drive the Grossglockner with him, I guess I'll just have to continue paying the lottery! ~ It would be kool to rolling down the Autobahn with 1957 Florida license plates. Smile

I still might fly to HO next year, I don't know but someday I know I will come back to the Fatherland to see "Matilda" again.

Thanks for stopping by here, TTYS

Hi Tom!
This car is just perfect. Good luck with it. Take good care.

@Christian: Jetzt ist die Familie hier vereint.

edit: Hope we see us all in HO next year.

Tip: Why don't you stuff all the money you spent at a lottery in a big box. When you open the box in a few years, you will for sure win the jackpot.

On the underside, use 0000 steel wool and CLR (bathroom cleaner) to remove the surface rust. It'll preserve any paint without scratching it badly, and then you can treat it to keep it from rusting again.

I haven't tried it yet, but I found this recipe for keeping rust at bay. I'll be mixing some up in the next month or so to try it on a '55 International pickup.

1 pound parrafin wax. Grind it up so it's easily dissolved.
1 gallon mineral spirits.
1 quart mineral oil.

Dissolve the wax in 2 quarts of mineral spirits, and add in the mineral oil. Use the other 2 quarts of mineral spirits to thin the mixture enough so it's sprayable. Use a cheap weed sprayer from Lowes/Home Depot to spray it. The mineral spirits will evaporate out and let the wax semi-harden, and the oil keeps it soft and "self healing" if it gets scratched/chipped. It's clear too, so you'll be able to see under it to make sure the rust isn't coming back.

Here's a spot I cleaned on my truck with CLR and 0000 steel wool. You can see how bad the rust was on the front part that hadn't been cleaned yet.

Thanks everyone for the great response to the pan perservation questions Smile ~ I'm going to jack up the car soon, put it on jack stands and check out just how the rust is looking and go from there........

Next week I'm going to call the Smithsonian (thanks to bobnorman) and see what the fabric preservation can best be done, I'm also hoping to get a rare set of seat covers from Germany soon, if I can work out the deal Smile

I'm also currently talking to the people who run the famous vintage Car Show Concours here in Lakeland, Florida called the Lake Mirror Classic, to see if they will include a "survivors class" in their judging this year, or to see if they will fit my car into a special display?

I will have the car *cleaned up* for the concours, leaving it all original with only preservation work done, not restoration, only the tires and the rubber will be the newest of parts, I expect to use all clean used parts in anything optical, outside of having the two front fenders resprayed and the inside of the fender wells, both front and back detailed, the rest of the cars optic will remain as-is.
I'm leaving the thin paint on the car all around, I think that's the best way. Very Happy

Enjoy!

Tom

They already have a section for survivors, Tom. I had my split in there a few years ago and it was real popular. We also entered our original, unrestored Herbie last year. Go ahead and enter and give them the details for the sign, and they'll put you in the appropriate section. Frankly I'm surprised more Volkswagens don't enter that show. I'm already excited to see Blauchen in there. I'm certain you'll get a prominent spot in front of the lake.

The lady who runs the show told me there's no awards or a judging class for survivors at that show at this time.............that's what she told me last week????
She also said she doesn't think that the survivor class will catch on here in Central Florida???? I don't know why? :/ ~ she's sending me the entry paperwork this week I'm going to register as soon as I can, I think it wil be quite possibly the FIRST serious show meet I get to drive out with the car this year?

I hope that I just get a special mention and maybe a place parked "up on the hill" maybe next to the restaurant on that little rise, where they used to park the Mercedes Benz Of America show cars.....when they used to come from California. (wishful thinking) Smile ~ it's real sad that MBOA doesn't participate anymore with cars from their west coast operations.....but the bad economy shot that down over 4 years ago, no more rare Mercedes from the California museum. Sad

I wish more vintage VW's would come out to the Lake Mirror Classic, but I'm pretty sure my 57 is the oldest original VW currently running in the area. (in Polk County)

I know of just one more car another 57 (which had alot of local history) that has supposedly been in restoration for over 5 years and well, it's no longer a original survivor car......

Greg, I'm pretty sure that your 52 Standard has been the OLDEST VW ever seen at the LMC. Very Happy - I was really happy to see it there!

Here's a very INTERESTING article I just found asking the question everyone will ask themselves if they have bought an UNRESTORED ALL ORIGINAL CAR............

"To Restore Or Not Restore, That Is The Question?"

http://www.historicvehicle.org/Latest-News/News-archive/March-2012/2012/03/16/Restore-or-Not-Restore

Enjoy the article,

Who cares about awards or judging? Just put it on display under "cars of particular interest." They'll shuffle you into the appropriate area, which will probably be along the lake with other unrestored survivors.

Please forgive me if my recommendations are different than the direction you want to go...

For the pans I would wash them first, soap & degreaser. Then wire brush them and apply POR15 Rust Preventative Satin Black paint (or clear, and yes they sell it in clear). Like above, I do not know your intent, but this would clean them up and protect them from rusting. Yes, they would look new, but is that a bad thing?

http://www.por15.com/POR-15/productinfo/1GB/

For the underside of the fenders/apron...same as above, clean the rust/grime off and apply POR15 rust protection paint....and yes they make a CLEAR.

For the exterior paint (on a small area only to test) wet sand it with 2000 grit sand paper and buff it out.

The interior, I would carefully remove the material from the seats/door panels, hand wash with soap and water and re-install. Yes it can be done if you have the patience

No that Clear POR 15 has me very interested, cuz what you have suggested with the pan is just what I want to do, I've heard nothing but good things always about POR 15.

Now about the interior, I don't think taking it apart is a good idea, the stiches are good and tight all over and the only damage the seats have are that one top side to the drivers seat is worn out.

I have never taken a seat apart, but I think the risk to destory the fabric is way too high.

I will more then likely just vacuum all the dust out and cover the two front seats with an old blanket, until I can afford to have clear plastic seat covers custom made (they are very expensive) and I'll keep the seats like that and take off the covers when the car isn't being driven, (so the fabric can breathe) that way the seats will stay original, some stains in the fabric give the car character, I don't think that they have to be any better looking than what they are now, just less dusty.......

On the interior, I know you want to stay original, but instead of plastic covers, why not call Wolfsburg West and buy the correct upholstery to replace your drivers seat?

Have you tried a carpet cleaner on the interior? Once again, I'd try it on a small piece. I thinking the foaming kind that you rub in and then remove by dabbing it with a damp/wet cloth...

No the fabric color won't match, my seats are faded....I need to find some remnants and sun fade them for about 6 to 8 months, or find original cloth on rolls back in Germany and do the same thing.......
(I have an ad posted here at the Samba looking for the fabric)

Still waiting to hear from a museum about cleaning the seats, liquid cleaners will mess up the inside of the seats and not dry correctly, if you get the insides of the seats wet with anything they will start to rot and mold....

I'm in no hurry to get the car on the road, I still don't have new tires or the brakes gone over, too many personal family issues with my Father's health and my own, I'm taking it nice and slow, this car needs alot of TLC and patience. Very Happy

I was poking around underneath the hood this morning looking for the body stamps here they are.........

Left Side:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Is an upside down E

Right Side:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Is a single number 5

Anyone know what day/dates that letter and number mean????

And the Body Serial 566889 and "European Only" Baujahr Stamp 1957

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I haven't ordered a Birth Certificate yet on the car, I have more important things to buy first before I indulge on that expensive piece of paper, my guess is that the car is from May/June 1957.

Sorry for all the dirt, I still haven't cleaned and polished under the hood yet, I suppose I'll try to get that done tomorrow (Sunday) Very Happy

Tom

I would like to hear from the 36HP Motor Guru's out there who can spot what's right and wrong on engines etc.......

My motor's serial number is #1914975 That's May 1957 correct?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

As far as I can tell from the records, this car has had only trhe spark plugs, intake manifold and the muffler replaced, I haven't noticed any parts on the motor that aren't May/June 1957.

I think maybe some of those bolts and screws on the engine tin might be newer than original I'm sure.

I want to keep the motor 100% original and restore it with correct era parts if it need be.......

Also I want to clean this up the best I can and also well "spiff" pretty it up a little bit, I have always been a fan of clean engine compartments, so any help or advice I would be very greatful. Very Happy

Thanks in Advance Smile

Tom
