I have a sapphire XVI am/fm town and country stereo does anybody know where they put the speakers? I looked in the technical stuff on the site but no manual on the XVI or any stereo speaker placement. Iam not looking for just anywhere but where vw placed them. not a bad find it was in a 72 bus I got for free and the radio works and its right for my 71 westy so far the rare goodies I have gotten from these free bus has been a working clock and this hard to come by radio not bad.

I believe the only place that VW installed the speakers were in the dash right above the radio.

I think you're right. I was looking under the dash the other day and found the single speaker I never knew was there. Let me know if you're interested in it.

You are missing the point this is a stereo you know 2 speakers the factory did not install sapphire radios the dealers did there were install manuals but there is not one in the list of manuals on the samba. most likely they put one in the factory spot then a remote surface mount speaker or maybe in the kick panel I guess its possible they put them in the doors but I really didn't want to cut my door panels.

I grabbed a sapphire stereo 8 track out of a 72 at a wrecking yard years ago and it had speakers in the front doors and rear side panels beside the rear seat (above the armrest I think), quadraphonic! Razz

It's not a Stereo at all... it's actually a Mono.

One speaker. One mount. Under the dash.

Stereo would have a knob for right and left (and thus multiple speakers).

Very cool "Town and Country" switch on the right there.

BTW If you're looking to restore your ride, I would take that guy up on his offer for the speaker/mount. They're crazy hard to find (at least in my searches).

Ah well it does have a knob for left and right you know STEREO how many times do I have to say it! just look it up the XVI is a stereo and from what I understand hard to find. would you like to see the left and right speaker wiring it has? and I have a few of those speaker mounts that jettalu was talking about.

but they do include a fader control for a rear speaker. AM-FM-MPX (stereo) wasn't available until the Sapphire XVI from Motorola in 1971. 8 track units in 1967 and later were true stereo, but were never AM-FM, just AM and 8 track.

As for the speaker mounts. My old '79 had speakers in the doors and in the panel below the rear seat. I considered them original as I was not familiar with the logo ( I had spent a few years in the aftermarket car audio biz. in the early 80s) and poor quality of them.

Ya that this what Iam thinking the wiring coming from the radio is plenty long enough to go out to the doors the wires are one piece they don't plug in to the back of the radio and still have the original plugs at the speaker end. I have been keeping one of the speakers in the glove box waiting for a manual or photo of a original install but knowing the dealers hack work alot of the time just where ever will do. It is a cool thing to have and it works good and right for a 71 theres the purist in me coming out it happens once in a while. Confused Laughing boy is he bothersome from time to time.

I have been looking through the gallery and found a couple of guys putting them here this looks nice I think I will punch a pattern of holes in the kick panel sense I have no grill covers for these speakers and it will look cleaner and no grill covers to kick off. Now to find the time to punch all those holes. Confused

Another option (if you don't want to cut anything) would be to add a dual voice coil speaker in the stock dash location. A dual voice coil allows two speaker connections in one "space".

yes I have seen those from retro sound and I like the idea but these old radios need 8 to 10 ohm speakers and the ones they sell are mostly (if not all) are 4 ohm. new radios these days are driving 4 ohm speakers un like the old ones. I did find a good web site for replacement stock speakers.

It was one of those colored plastic screens they sold in the 50's to make your black and white TV appear to be color, you know...green along the bottom, clear in the middle and blue along the top.
