Maybe they just had fun.
But, is there a single part on these fragments that is worth more than
that digging had cost? I guess no.

I sure hope they checked out the hole with a metal detector to make sure there wasn't any loose lug nuts left behind to help complete the restoration _________________ Hacksaw BoB

You guess wrong! And i not understand why thats a topic!
We did the trip for the history and the fun. And what a trip.! The kubel is looking terrible, but the front beam is perfect, steeringwheel is possible to restore, nice gearknob, spindels, rear shockabsorbers that works, lightswitch some body panels and the floorpan with id.
And then we also got the france Gnome Et Rhome motorcycle sidecar in remarkably condition. 2-3 rust holes and everything working after 50-60 years in the ground.
Did hear about this car 12-15 years ago. Did borrow a bomb detector from the Norwegian army. See today it was to powerfull so the area it had detected was not all correct _________________ http://thesplitcruisers.blogspot.com/ |

Hello "Usariemen"
I read quite a lot on the samba. I am not that eager writer though. I "always" see a sceptic or negativ comment from you........ I wander, do you actually have any VW stuff yourself, and in case so, how did you get it ? I suspect you use very much time trying to put others down....... And less time on VW`s.
Try searching for a Kubelwagen identity, steering wheel, complete front suspention, rear shockabsorbers, gear shifter, doors with locks and front screen frame, and then tell me how much money you end up spending. I am pretty sure it more than doubles the money we spent on digging for this car. ( And you dont have the slightest clue what that figure is) But you are actually right about one thing........ We did have lots of fun !

I'm amazed that it didn't rust away within that time underground.
I glad you have found some parts you can use as well as maybe some wall art. |

Even if nothing is usable, it's cool that you found it and dug it up.
What is the story behind finding this? _________________ Chris

When the Germans left Norway in 1945-46 they left behind a huge amount of vehicles, and among them "lots" of Kubelwagens. These were sold to civilians and used as daily drivers up to the 1960s. After that you did not longer need a license to buy a car in Norway, and the Kubelwagens were suddenly very out-dated.
And so is the case with this car. When the owner of the garden where it was dug up needed to fill a small "ravine" in his garden, a neighbor offered him to use his old car, no longer in use, to reduce the amout of gravel needed to fill the hole. The owner of the house also dumped his motorcycle sidecar at the same time. This was in 1965 or 66.
Kent has for the last 20 years ( almost) been running around northern-norway asking people if the new of any OLD VW-related cars and parts. Via via via via somone, Kent heard of this Kubel burried in this garden. This must have been 11-12 years ago. He visited them then, but never got to do the digging until now.
We ( Or Kent that is....) knows of "many" burried Kubelwagens ! ! Unfortenately non of them are accessable. Some are burried together with explosives. Some under huge factory-buildings. Under air-fields, and so on.
This one was accessable, thanks to the VERY cooperative family, that found entertainement in seeing two, more than crazy guys, digging up their front lawn !

What is the story behind finding this? |
Been into VW for around 22years now. Always loved the old ones.
11-13years ago i was looking for a kubel and asked lots of people that could remember who had kubel or even better a schwim.
Got the info about this car and a name. Could not find it so i started calling the people with the same last name. 2-3 try i found the son of the owner.
He could tell me his father was dead and the car was gone. He told me then that the car was buried in the neighbors garden.
Talked with the neighbor and to my supprise it was no problem if i wanted to dig it up. Borrowed one bombdetector and thought i found it.
But after that it stopped until 3 month ago when i and Anders talked about the car.
Both need parts for our cars so when i called the owners of the garden and got only positive answers you see the result _________________ http://thesplitcruisers.blogspot.com/ |

Well, I have posted now more than 750 times. I am sure the absolute majority of these posts where not sceptical or negative.
And those which where, where appropriate in my eyes.
That one now was not meant as negative as you maybe felt it to be.
I saw just nothing really useable on that picture and wondered if it was worth the struggle.
If you say there are useable parts and even for the fun of VW hunting it was worth it. Good.
And, yes, I have VW stuff myself and I usually donīt spend any time to put anyone down. _________________ Master of my domain! |

I agree. It would be a better forum if usariemen weren't always so negative.
Big congratulations to my buddy Kent and Anders for the retrieval. You all must realize that nobody knows the condition of what's buried until they get the equipment, go out and dig it up! It's like the Plymouth Fury in the Tulsa time capsule. You don't know what you'll find until you dig.
A Kubelwagen had been rumored to be buried in a remote part of Norway for many years, and it's quite a story when someone goes to excavate it. This is something Kent has talked about doing for years, but the window of time is very narrow during the year when the ground is soft enough to dig -- this is north of the Arctic Circle!
What people also don't know is Kent owns a partial Kubelwagen, so with this addition, he should have more to work with. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Sorry, I missed the last few posts before mine. Good information and some things I didn't know.
Generally things tend to stay in better condition buried under what amounts to year-round permafrost. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Wow, you really think so? Any more?
In my profile all my posts can be reread. I donīt expect anyone is interested in doing so, but I just took a look at them.
At least there are not many negative ones.
Just sometimes when I see or read bullshit, I call it bullshit.
I do not think we have such sensible souls here around that they canīt stand that.
Here we have the guys who digged out that Kübel and they are exited and proud of it. So they got upset when one came up with a comment which sounded negative to them.
As I said, it wasnīt meant as negative as it may sounded.
In fact there are two places close to me where I plan to dig for a split and a split vert somewhen. And even when I just find junk, I guess it will be fun. _________________ Master of my domain! |

The chassisnumber indicates that the Kubel is produced in april-42. The bodytag says productionyear 1941.
Blue Baron: We actually dont have year-round permafrost here. But we have had a very cold spring this year so part of the ground was actually still frozen where the Kubel was.
Enthusiasts ( more crazy than we are, believe it or not !) here in Norway say it should be restored, as it is the early type. Time will tell if someone give it a go, or if it ends up as parts and wall art..........as originally intended.
