69 type 3 question: does anyone know if the 'power supply relay -for fuel injection system' would be located under the dash, on the left- by the fuse box?
my book describes possible problem with it, but doesn't show where it is located. There has been a clicking sound on and off, under the dash, and this corresponds with jerking motion (sometimes) with acceleration. when i went to start it today, it made the clicking sounds and then died.
any help would be so appreciated, thanks!
Linda

I believe the one under the dash is the fuel pump relay and the main relay is under the rear seat next to the defrost relay on the drivers side.

someone else will confirm or correct this.

thanks for the replies. i just found this in another type three manual:

"There are 2 relays important to the fuel injection system. The main power relay supplies power to the control unit and the fuel pump relay. Both relays are located on the left side of the engine compartment."

Would the fuel pump make the sounds described in my first post?

I am learning, and very thankful for the shared knowledge.

Thanks!

It sounds like an L-Jet car, like a late Type 4 or a Bus. On a Type 3, the FP relay is up under the dash, and the FI power relay is under the back seat by the voltage regulator. There are two identical relays there if you have electric rear defrost. The power relay will have a red/ black wire coming off the battery + terminal going to it. That wire may have an additional black covering, but it will go from the + side of the battery to that relay.

Wiring diagram:

Power relay is J17.

Key to wiring diagram:

NOTE: This does NOT cover the FI system wiring. If you need that, I can scan it and post it for you.

What is your issue?

thanks for your time on this
my issue is: random (doesn't always happen) jerking with acceleration, coupled with clicking sound at that place under dash. today when i went to start it, clicking sounds, and it wouldn't stay running. also noticed white smoke from exhaust.
eurgh.

Check connections at both relays and grounds for relay system.

Also, I made a mistake- J17 is the blue wire to the fuel pump relay up front, and J16 is the power relay.

And now, the rest of the story:

Should be clear now.

Terminal 85 on the PS relay needs a good ground, as does the brown wire on the pump. All other connections on both relays need to be clean and tight. Make sure you have a good connection at the battery terminals also.
