I was cleaning my GoldWing last night and was thinking.
It has a compact 1800 cc boxer motor that is fuel injected and has 180 hp.
Anyone ever try putting one of those in a Bug?

FYI....because the motor is a component of the frame and when they get laid down or (heaven forbid) run into something..the insurance companies don't fix them, they total them out and I have seen them go for $500 .
With all the crap that I have on mine , it has to weigh 1100 pounds...and I can smoke a corvette from a standing start up to about 90 when the motor stops pulling hard.

Any thoughts (other than agreeing with my wife that I am too old to be riding a motorcycle) ?

That's an interesting idea! What is the bore and stroke on those engines? What about clutch issues with a heavier VW?

I have not a clue on boar and stroke....I will need to google it.
As far as clutch goes....I actually tow a little trailer that weighs about 500# when it is fully loaded down (we do wine rides and the Boss loads it down at each stop we make).
I had a clutch put in it at 87,000 miles and the guy at Wingworks said it would have gone another 20k or so.
What could be sweet would be some place like McCloud to take a VW blank fly wheel and put a GoldWing crank bolt pattern on it and have plate to go between the motor and trans.
I have a Atlantic in boxes that has a Hewland transaxle that is based on a VW style case....with a adapter plate that bolts the Holbay engine on.
I will have to find the box with that and see.

About 20 years ago, I put a 903 Kawasaki in a bug eyed sprite by making a longer drive shaft an hooking it up to the output shaft on the Kawi trans (long detailed story on how it was done).
That car would scream. No clutch problems ....and no reverse.

That engine is actually an Alfa Romeo engine.
- I think the 180 hp is........ slightly positive. Most of them produce about 155-160 IRL.
Anyway. It is not a problem Adapters are produced several places. I even think KEP have them in their program.

Torque is what will push a VW down the road.

Great info.
Thank you.
The 180 hp is what the people at WingWorks told me after they charged me $250 for some part and installation.
The Wing does scare me sometimes when I am riding down the road and wondering why everyone else is going so slow.
The Boss whacks my helmet and says unkindly things on the intercom.

Thats enough power and torque to make it worthwhile to give er a go - but I think the Subaru transplant would be a better investment since all the parts needed are available over the counter. Even a small Subaru motor will provide more power. Want more? Go with one of the turbo versions. Can you buy an 1800 GW motor for $500?

I'm sure the Honda engine will not have the head gasket and timing belt issues that the Subi's have.

not realy, justlook at where the cam on a vw would be, and then the sump and then the added sump, looks great to me, and with some work probably a lot more power.and of corse the honda brand with it's superrior casting&machining, manufacture, desine, reliabilty, etc. bore it to 94 stick some 450f pistons in it,have jose stroke it a bit ,bore out the throttle bores and go have fun.

I asked a friend who is a buyer for a company called "CoPart" to look and see what the 6cyl Wings were going for .
He said that a couple that had been in front end wrecks went for $350.
There is soooo much ABS plastic on these things that is soooo expensive...that no body wants them.
I asked him to keep an eye out for me.
People in the GoldWing club think that I am nuts.
They say that my problem will be the electronics.

Along with putting a 903 in a sprite, I have done things like putting a 350 chevy in a TR-6 and a 260 Z...a 302 in a Plymouth Arrow mini pick up, a 215 olds aluminum V-8 from a 64 into a Datsun 510....and some other "different" combinations.

Maybe it is because I drink too much beer and end up staring at stuff in my little shop too long.

That 215 into a 510 was a popular swap back in the good ol' days!

Buick aluminum V8's have been swapped into mid engine Crovairs, makes a nice light powerpack. I'd be interested to see if the Honda engine fit width-wise into an unmolested VW engine bay, would be an interesting swap.
