|

I've read here that there's an article in either VWTrends or HotVWs from a few years back that detail how to rebuild the door handles of a '67 bug.. Does anyone know what month/year issue I should order? That I haven't found... _________________ Marius Strom http://www.marius.org/

I dont even know why one would do that. What are you trying to accomplish? _________________ Wanted:

The locking/unlocking mechanisms with the keys are a bit janky. Need to lift on the driver's side key to get the mechanism to move, and have to turn the key 3-4 times to get the lock to pop. Hoping to get that all resolved. _________________ Marius Strom http://www.marius.org/

This is common. The easiest fix is just to swap the handles. Put left door handle on right door and vice versa. They are interchangeable. When you swap, you essentially get a "new" paddle (the device that pushes up the door lock when you twist the key). This is the unworn underside of the paddle from the opposite door.
Problem solved in less than 10 minutes. _________________ Wanted:

I followed that write-up and now both locks work like a champ.
$.50 standoff from the hardware store.
Tap the hole
File it flush
Good as new

For those who aren't that mechanical, '67 lock mechanisms can't be found. Instead later year mechanisms can be used but you have to cut off a section to make it fit. I did it on my '67.

I'm mostly through this and will take some good photos and try to do a writeup on this project tomorrow. One of my O-rings between the thumb-button and the mechanism is shot - does anyone know the dimensions/replacement info for this ring? ETKA just says NLA for it (MG:8 SG:37 Ill:94-00 POS 33 for those that want to see it in ETKA).
I'm planning to take the one good (but really brittle) ring up to Tacoma Screw, but would appreciate it if someone knows the right dimensions so I can be armed with some advance knowledge. _________________ Marius Strom http://www.marius.org/

| ^ did you ever find your matching ignition, or just decided it was easier to rebuild what you already had? |

So far finding it easier to rebuild what I have. It's not difficult at all, and I think I'll solve a lot of my issues by putting the guide pins back (both of mine were missing, but the springs were there!)
The other thing that this has led me to realize is that a lot of the locking mechanisms is outside of the control of the handle. There's a latching mechanism in the door, and my passenger one has previous-owner paint on it. Ugh. So it's sticky, and I'll have to fix that. _________________ Marius Strom http://www.marius.org/
