If one grew up there then he/she should know. It's only been around since 1948. |
I too am fond of In n Out - being born and raised in SoCal. But I have found better Red Mill for one right here. Have you been there yet udidwht ?? |
Yes, I have as well as quite a few others that were recommended such as The Lunchbox Lab, Five Guys, BurgerMeister, Triple XXX, Zak's, Uneeda, Mr Lu's, Dick's, Herfy's, Kidd Valley etc...
I'll try any burger once...but to this day nothing comes close to 'In N Out'. I've tried burgers in probably 30 different countries. Blindfold me and I'll easily pick out the In N Out. Tommy's is not even close in terms of quality nor taste. It's also not what it used to be years ago.
The most decent burger I've had so far here in the Seattle area would have to be Katsu Burger in Georgetown. But still no In N Out.
There's a reason why 'In N Out' is known world wide. In four words...Quality you can taste. Not to mention most burger joints here are overpriced. I can purchase six Double Doubles (made your way) with fries and drinks for what (2) can eat at Red Mill.
There's even a heavy movement to get them to open here. They now are in Arizona, Utah, California and Texas. When they do look out... Seattle burger joints will be dropping like flies since they won't be able to compete. |
Allright brother, I feel you |
from what I understand the chain was slow to grow because they paid cash as they opened locations. They are by far one of the best burgers around. The stories of people driving from SF to LA (500 miles each way) to get an In - Out hamburger are documented. I know when I lived in San Diego people would drive that 100 miles each way to get one. It was not an uncommon trip on a Friday night. _________________ Steve aka Merlin the Wrench

Lot's of good suggestions. jhicken has some good stuff.
Here's is some more-
You're starting in Newport (probably flying into John Wayne) so if that's where you are getting the bus it's prime time to drive the bus thru the little Balboa Island and take the little ferry across the bay. (That's all Newport). Take pics of you and the bus on the ferry so you can post them in the Bay forum topic about Bays in the bay .
Up PCH to Seal Beach/Long Beach but get off PCH and follow Ocean Blvd. thru L.B. Honk as you pass the Queen Mary and the Spruce Goose (check your detailed map). Then Ocean Blvd. to Seaside Frwy 710 and across Port of Long Beach, the big awesome bridge and L.A Harbor. Then 110 back to PCH. When you pass Redondo, Hermosa, Manhatten Beaches there is a must do requiring pre planning. Be sure you have your sound device loaded with the Beach Boys, Ventures, and other period correct sounds. You will be in the only type of vehicle that requires those sounds.
As you pass LAX take a good look. After the San Andreas breaks and dumps So Cal it will be called ExLax.
As you get to Venice Blvd. be sure and do Venice Beach. It will probably be memorable. Remember, with all the little shops selling Meds, driving under Med influence is totally wrong.
And then you will pass Santa Monica which is a fun beach also. Get out and walk because between Venice and Santa Monica you will be very well entertained, amazed and about everything else.
As you go by Malibu remember that the bus you are in is so much more cool than the rides the movie stars have.
Naturally you will be taking highway 1 all the way up. I think highway 1 is why a bay window was put in Bay window buses.
It's been many many years but I wouldn't go inland at Carmel. But rather all the way around the peninsula. Seems like part of it is the 17 Mile Drive. You've probably seen some of the scenery shots on TV golf tourneys.
Then in Monterey get some seafood out on a warf. Cannery Row and the Montery Bay Aquarium is supposidly top notch. I'm sad I missed the aquarium.
Santa Cruz is cool, and actually about everywhere up the coast is cool so do as much as you can. Keep doing it all until you about run out of time. 2 weeks? When time is about up head over to 5 and blast straight on back south. _________________ The best thing that anyone can do for their Bay is get the Volkswagen of America Official Service Manual published by Robert Bentley. It's funny how all the chain joints (Jack, Wendy, etc.) keep getting longer and more complex menus to get more business. In N Out couldn't be shorter, more basic and more simple. It's just wonderful. _________________ The best thing that anyone can do for their Bay is get the Volkswagen of America Official Service Manual published by Robert Bentley. X2 on the 17 mile drive, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, well worth the detour.
Your next trip out should be to explore the coast north of San Francisco. That could easily take up another week or more. The headlands just on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge are breathtaking, Nappa is like Tuscany, the Redwoods, driving through the Giant Redwood in Leggit, Ave of the Giants, all should be on your bucket list.

An addendum to my Tommys recommendation. I'm speaking strictly of the Rampart/Beverly location, the other Tommy chain locations I can't speak for. _________________ Central Jersey Volkswagen Society

I was just on the 1 from Fort Bragg to San Francisco, and that is the coolest road I have ever been on...Big Sur without the comercialism. You could even park overnight in turnouts. Many of the little towns have stores that come right out to the street. The speed limits are low and the roads are winding with a lot of ups and downs. It is exactly the type of roads the bus just loves. I will be getting back there in the future. _________________ Ken

Thanks for confirming that Jeff. When I was there it was all natural and uninhabited, probably a bit different now and hope much of the beauty has been preserved. Come to think about it, '69 Bays were brand new on the showroom floors.
So much online to figure out what you want to do and where to go. Vids, maps, street view, world view, etc. And live cams everywhere.
Here's an example. This one is not continuous streaming but it would be fun to call your friends back home and let them watch live you cross on the little Balboa ferry. http://talesofbalboa.com/webcams/balboabay.htm _________________ The best thing that anyone can do for their Bay is get the Volkswagen of America Official Service Manual published by Robert Bentley. Bowdon68 - have you been to California before and driven across the state? We are about 750 miles N to S and 300 miles E to W. That is a lot of area so really what you see and your route will depend upon what you have done here before and what you expect of the trip. It will depend on whether you plan to camp in the bus or stay in motels. Do you plan to spend a day at places like Disneyland etc or are you looking for scenic views only? How many hours a day do you plan to drive etc. _________________ Steve aka Merlin the Wrench

Ok that helps a lot.
Name the 3 or 4 favorite hobbies you have and a few type things you like to do.
Do you plan to camp in the bus or stay in a motel?
How many hours a day spent driving is too much?
How many $$ are allotted for buying gas while here? _________________ Steve aka Merlin the Wrench

Depending on when you have to head back to So Cal you should head east from San Francisco (about a 2 hr drive) and try to make it to these events:
July 27, 2012 - Bugs, Buses, Bikes, and a Band 2012
Oakdale, California
Another hour east to
July 28, 2012 - 12th Annual Mother Lode VW Show & Swap Meet
Angels Camp, California
Information on both events is available using the "Community" tab.
I've never been to the Bugs, Buses, and Bikes event but the Angels Camp show is in a very nice park setting and great people. |
