Ok ..... So I told you all I'd give you a good story and I aim to please ... LOL
So on the way down to L.A. for the Classic weekend we take the 99 south and over a huge mountain pass and steep grade commonly known as " The grapevine ...
This in itself is always a challenge when driving any car let alone a 36 hp VW ...
Then add in the fact that there was a MAJOR fire in the pass that created a bunch of traffic and a major mess of the cars from all the soot in the air from it along with being hard to breathe for quite a few miles ....
But , all things aside , We managed to make it through before they completely shut down the pass ... Thank goodness !!!
Once we got over the hill and dropped back down into L.A. the traffic was horrendous !!!
What normally takes an hour trip took us about 3 hours to make it to the host hotel ...
But it was cool .... We finally made it and we were greeted by seeing a TON of barndoors in the parking lot !!!!
It was a pretty amazing sight to see actually ...
But when we pulled in Russell had been driving Spanky 56 ragtop and he had noticed a noise that sounded like a rattle from an engine tin so we proceeded to open the decklid.... that's when the .. "Fun" began you could say ...
So I can't seem to find a pic of the damage itself , But in a nutshell the idler pulley of my serpentine belt system had exploded the bearings out of it and was barely wobbling around on the end of the shaft that connects it to the slider piece that adjusts the tension of the belt ....
Knowing I wasn't going to find a replacement very easily or be able to hunt down bearings on the weekend and not being familiar with the area , I started to brainstorm what kind of a "fix" could I come up with to get us around town and to the show on sunday where I figured I could find something or another serpentine system all together ...
So if you look closely , You will see a skateboard wheel as my make-shift idler pulley .....
So Jake who owns the bagbug happened to have a skateboard with him in is truck and I used a wheel off of it along with a longer bolt and miscellaneous nuts & washer combo to achieve the adaptation to the original sliding mechanism ....
I was pretty proud when I turned the key and started the car ... IT HAD WORKED !!!
So on sunday I found a Scat system and purchased it as their idler pulley and slider are a direct match for the BMD system that I have on Spanky .... What a Rush you could say !!!!
Here's a few pics of the cars @ Octo and the ClassicS
ENJOY !!!
Thanks to Jim K (aka Banzai Kg) for the great pics !!!!
Here's a few more from Octo also ....
And here's a pic of all of us ready to head out for home on monday from the host hotel .... What a weekend !!!!
That's about it for now , I also got to chase down the busfarmers barndoor caravan when they came through on thursday down the 99 , That was AWESOME to witness !!! Got some good pics in my gallery...
feel free to take a look

OK I'm hooked! I can't believe you have been in my back yard the whole time. Your stories are great and I am very inspired by your success. I hope I can meet you soon as I too am from the valley and though I may not have the same skills, we do share the same interest when it comes to vw's. Thank you for your inspiration. |

Thanks !!!
I actually am going to give the wheel back to my friend ... LOL
Think he wants his board back....
BUT I have since got a hold of chris @ BMD pulleys and he was more than willing to GIVE me a new idler pulley for FREE , along with a sincere apology ...
The newer style idler pulley looks like it uses bearings that are twice the size of the original set-up , In fact they honestly appear to be alternator shaft bearings to me ...
Chris really stood behind his product and that was awesome !!!
After ten years of use I was fully expecting to just have to purchase a whole new idler pulley from him , but not only did he REFUSE the $$$ , he also met me at the gas station on the corner by my house !!!
He happens to work in Fresno and was more than willing to make it easy on me as he felt bad that I had gotten one of the first systems he ever sold back when before he upgraded the bearings...
He is going to sell me a spare to have / keep in the tool box for a minimal charge ...
I think that was really cool of him > Be nice if ALL the companies stood behind their product the way Chris / BMD pulleys did !!
Was definitely refreshing !!!

Here's a quick pic or 2 of the idler pulley / damage Vs. the newer style with a much bigger / improved bearing....
Sorry they r kinda blurry but I think you can still get a decent idea ....
Let's see how long this one lasts....

| He and Pam were making a left turn into a friends driveway from a county road when a drunk tried to pass them on the left in a Ford F600 company truck, t-boning him on the drivers side and pushing the car about 150 feet. They walked away with bumps, bruises and a lot of residual soreness but Precious was destroyed. |

^^^ Thanks John for the update ...
Well it's been 7 months since the accident and we are both still in a decent amount of pain from this whole ordeal ...
Our lives have been filled with ALOT of chiropractor /therapy and doctors visits you could say , and we STILL are not yet even close to feeling "normal" yet ...
But we are hanging in there and getting around the best we can for now
I think people look at us and think that we must "be fine" ... I wish that were true....
We both still hurt quite a bit , limiting us, and it flat out SUCKS !!!
Anyhow, enough whining ..... We are truly VERY lucky that we walked away from this .... Might not look that bad , But it was bad to us in so many , many ways ... and our poor "Precious"
^^ That dent in the door going out was from under my armpit / shoulder blade ... OUCH !!!
The guy was doing about 65 mph or so when he hit us with his F-450 dually work truck with solid steel bumpers ...
He then drove with us stuck to the front of his truck about a half a football field down the road and almost pushing us off the embankment on the side of the road where would have without a doubt flipped/ rolled over ....
It was literally 6 inches or less where we stopped at the edge of the road to the embankment....
Car is DONE !!!
It's literally bent like a taco front to back and the force of the hit was so hard that it broke the trans nose cone area and rear cradle mounts causing the motor to temporarily "jump" out of it's home .... axles to break the cv's , and literally bent / twisted the torsion bar area and irs mounts at the pan horns rendering the pan useless also.....
Here's a few more .... RIP "Precious" Ghia ..... We will miss her dearly
Sorry for such a bummer post , But in a way it felt good to finally "Let it Go " ....
There is still a ton of BS to deal with in the situation ..... But we do have a pretty good lawyer ....
So keep your fingers crossed , & Thanks for all the support !!!
So that's "What Fresno James has been up to lately " ... LOL
Stay Tuned ..... I'm not done just yet !!!!
