Can someone tell me which wires go to which fuses? (ie red wire (left high beam) - fuse #3)
I never learned how to read the wiring diagram... I do have the the sheet saying what each fuse does i just do not know what color wires go to what.
Thanks! |

That would take a long while and a long post.
Try This. On the diagram are the fuses. Find them all and highlight them. Beside each fuse is the number that the fuse is, counting from left to right in the fuse block. For example, S1 on the drawing will be fuse #1 and S12 will be fuse #12. Note the wire colors to each one and you've got it.
Also, at the bottom of the diagram, there are some fuse block drawings. These show the wire colors to a few of the fuses. These drawings can help you double check your findings. _________________ 79 super Vert

What car do you have? If you have a 74(?) or later, you have the new wiring diagrams, like this one:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/VW_1303_Beetle_1974_Europe_Wiring_Diagram.pdf
Takes a little time to break the code, but once you have, they are quite good.
On the bottom, below the yellow line, you se a drawing of the fuse box and the color of each wire that connect to each fuse.
If you start going upwards on the wiring diagram, you should look for an "S" with a number. That's the fuse (S1 is the left one, S12 is the one to the right). Here is where you find the details, which wire goes where.
Have fun.

There's no way you can do this yourself without learning to read the wiring diagrams. You are lucky that the '73 diagram (new style - logical) is functionally very similar to the '72 (old style - physical).
This '72 diagram has almost all the same systems connected to the same fuses as the '73:
The lowest fuse in the diagram is S1, the top fuse is S12.
The key point to note is that some of the fuses are tied together on one side. You can see this along the left side of the fuse box in the diagram. This side of the fuse is the INPUT side. Connections on this side are NOT protected by the fuses in the fuse box.
You can easily see how the single white wire from the headlight dimmer relay powers two fuses S5 & S6 (one for each headlight element). This is expected.
You can also see that the black/yellow wire from the ignition switch "X" terminal comes into fuse S10 on the left and another black/yellow wire leaves the same side of the fuse box going to the headlight switch. This second wire is an input to the headlight switch to power the headlights. The current from this "X" circuit flows from the headlight switch and passes through the headlight dimmer relay, eventually returning to the S3-S6 fuses and then goes on to power the headlights.
Interestingly, you cannot actually SEE this is the '72 diagrams because you cannot make out which of the terminals at the ignition switch/horn/turn signal switch are for the ignition switch. Nor can you see how the current will flow through the headlight switch or the dimmer relay. On the '73 diagram you can clearly see this starting in column 12 and then on to column 16. _________________ AshMan40

Thanks guys!
Took a little bit but figured out the wiring diagram... not really that hard
Only problem I really had was most the steak ons at the fuse box were rotten and fell apart
but I now have reverse lights, front left turn signal, and high beams! |
