I have a 65 bug that I am planning to install dual 28 PICT Solex. As far as I know, there was never a dual 28 PICT carbs aftermarket kit. If anyone has ever done this set up, I would like to know how do I do it particularly the custom manifolds, linkages and other essential parts that are needed to complete it. Thanks a lot in advance for your replies. Enjoy your vee-dubs daily.. Thanks.

For a 1200cc, I'm only aware of the dual 32 PBIC kit that mimics the old Okrasa set up.

http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/wolfsburg_new/engine/25-36hp/WW_dual_port_carb.cfm

The whole kt, to include new heads, looks like the one below.

Thanks for the reply. I have checked those repro okrasa kit, but it is too expensive besides, it may not fit on a '65 vw engine with a later block design. I was thinking of the idea of customizing the manifolds, etc., for the 2 stock 28 PICT Solex carbs. And in this set up, the manifolds and linkages are of paramount consideration. Hence, I need some informations on how it is being customized.

Thanks so much.

Here's some pics of my dual 28 PCI setup in my old '64 ghia, currently the motor is sitting in my garage awaiting rebirth in my '65 ghia 'vert.

The manifolds are made from regular 40hp manifolds.

perhaps might get more/better responses in vintage speed forum?

Thanks so much for those pictures. Surely, it will help me on my project. Did you re-jet these carbs for proper air/fuel mixture to match the engine? Thanks again.

I have not re-jetted them yet, as i have a 83mm big bore kit to put in first, then jets as needed.

I just bought a NOS Borg Wagner vintage linkage (circa early 70's) for vws. I will use this for my dual 28 PICT Solex project...

this is the Manual that came from the set:

I hope this works.... Any inputs, comments or suggestions, are very much welcome.. Thanks

here is an nos Empi dual carburetor kit I just purchased.
It is designed to use dual stock carburetors on 36 or 40 hp motors.

very cool. It appears the heat riser block offs have an "R" stamped on them, and judging by the looks it appears to be a Rethwish kit which EMPI carried before they carried the Okrasa kit. I have the same Rethwish kit on my '58 bus. It appears that you have two of the brackets for the carb linkage, that's odd. Where did you find it? Do you have other pictures? Any directions? I found mine under an old guys house already installed. Did yours come with air cleaners or indicate what cleaners were used?

Here is the ad which I scanned from one of my Empi catalogs.
I believe the reason there are two brackets included are because one may be for the 36hp and the other for the 40hp ?
They are slightly different.

Thanks Richard, very cool ad, answers my question about the air filters. I am running a pair of original Knecht early Porsche filters right now. I think you are right about the linkage one for the 36 and one for the 40.

Which means it is probably only good on the bastard engine and not later 40hp engines, which means it was likely not made after '60? Is there any year on your lit or the box?
Come to think of it, when I pulled all this stuff out of the guy's house there was a bastard 40 engine amongst the heap of engines, but I also found a 36hp engine with an original EMPI 69.5 crank which is also pre-Okrasa.

The box is post marked 1965.
The catalog the ad came from is dated 1963.
So it will work on 40hp motors.
The Okrasa kits were available in the late 1950's.

I recently customized a dual 30 PICT Solex (instead of dual 28 PICT) and these are the process as shown on the pictures:

The donor parts: two 1200 K manifolds and two 30 PICT carbs plus the Borg Warner NOS Linkage I bought.

The removed the end castings of the intake and exhaust manifolds.

Preparing for the proper alignments of the manifolds to get the correct angels.

Welding together the intake and exhaust manifolds.

Checking the fitments whether the carbs snags correctly in the intake manifold.

I bought a tubing for the balances and had it bended to mimic the Okrasa style.

I also bought this tubing for the fuel system and had it welded too to again imitate the Okrasa style.

Welding the balancer onto the manifold.

The finished manifolds. I placed the dual carbs to see if the alignments and angels are in order.

The initial checking for the parts to be needed prior to the installation.

I painted the manifolds using pilox easy spray paints.

Installing the manifolds, the dual 30 PICT Solex carbs and the balancer.

I placed the fuel lines onto the engine after installing the carbs and had it bended accordingly to its proper positions.

Finally, finished, expect for the vintage style air cleaners.

The video of the engine running. I think I need to re-jet these carbs.

Thanks a lot.

I am planning to customize an Okrasa Style exhaust systems. I would like to have some pictures of the construction of the inside of the exhaust systems. If anyone of you has it, I would highly appreciate if you would share it with me. Thanks a lot.
