Rolled over 80K on the odometer early this morning driving 220 miles round trip to a import only show across West Virginia.
On the way home, helped a fellow club member perform a road repair of the points in his fat cap distributer. Here I was waiting on the spare parts to arrive. Nice thing is it broke in a shady area.

Worked on the landscaping yesterday. Who needs a pickup truck when you've got a Thing? Swallowed ten 40-pound bags of topsoil without any problem at all.

So I searched the forum about rotisseries. Never mind that I read somewhere that taking the body off is the amateur nightmare.
Bought $300 of steel, used my Lincoln 110 volt flux mig welder and made one.
I slowly raised the body using two hoists bolted to the ceiling joists. Every couple of inches I put stuff under it incase something came lose. I used a strap amidships so it would not turn.
Today I moved the chassis out
then started rotating the body. Forgot about center of gravity so of course it rotated upside down...
...And knocked me into a tire. Hmm, one of the ribs now is a bit sore and I am scared to death I will have to sneeze.
I can remake the rotisserie so it has three pieces of square tubing more toward the center of gravity.
WHere can i get a gear and worm drive to control it?
Also, is the chassis to body seal from Thing Shop for $16 what I need when I put it back together? |

Go a call from my Big Brother to check the latest Hot VW's August edition. Coverage from the 2012 TX Classic was in.
Got a nice surprise. Photo of our Thing. Unfortunately, the wrong last name was attached in the photo caption. It was correct in the awards listing. But I will still enjoy the picture opportunity in the magazine.
Chalk one more up for the Thing population.
sorry for photo quality. no scanner here. Old style pic of a pic.

I just bought that pan-to-body seal from the Thing Shop. However, it is a thin foam seal with adhesive backing - not what I was expecting. I was expecting the typical rubber seal used on Bugs. But I guess it will do the job. _________________ Mike B.

Cool!, I've kicked around the idea of mounting an air cannon on my rollbar with interchangable barrels to launch different items at events. T-shirts, confetti, streamers, nerf rockets, ect.... _________________ 74 VW Thing - Walküre

| Today I pondered putting in shoulder belts. Don't want to hinder the back seat passengers if possible. Have a roll bar, lo-bak seats (will change to hi-baks soon hopefully). Went for a ride this late p.m., still a bit chilly - but what fun! |

Went to a BBQ contest in support of a fellow dubber who was competing. Upon arriving I discovered massive oil leak coming from left side of engine. Fear I had blown a oil cooler seal. Turns out it was just the rocker cover gasket failed or shifted. Also discovered that removal of said cover is imposible with split header system still attached. Luckily I had all the necessary tools to remove the header, rocker cover, and then replace the gasket with one of my onboard ready spares. Crisis adverted.
Got a lot of positive comments and smiling faces. I was going to ask some attending SeaHawk Gals if I could take a picture of them sitting on my Thing but refrained out of fear they would misunderstand my intentions. I did manage to get a picture of some other chick sitting in it (not quite the same).

Loaded the Thingster for an early start tomorrow.
I am leaving Cupertino, driving up the CA,OR & WA coasts to get to Olympia WA, to see my daughter Clara The bus girl, the up the Oly Peninsula to take the ferry to Whitby Island, see friends, the to my cousin in North Vancouver BC.
Back to Burger meet in Seattle, the Vintage meet where I hope to remeet some PNW Thingers, Down on to Portland for the Rose City Bug-in, the Treffen drive back to San Francisco.
I know I will be driving for a lot more than 43 hours, but I will be taking my time, camping and fishing up the coast.
Fantastic scenery, I hope I will find some camping spots, but I really will plan properly some day, but for now I have to 'wing' it.

Sam, when will you be passing through Port Townsend? We have a big VW Camp and Cruise up by Mt Baker on 13-15 July. I love cruising up Whidbey Island. Check out Chuckanut drive on your way up. Deception Pass State Park is a nice place to camp and fish.
If we can't connect before then, I'll see you and Burger Meet and Vintage. _________________ 74 VW Thing - Walküre

Attended the 31st annual Vintage Meet at Shoreline Community College. Hundreds of VW present. 8 181s in attendence. Manage to pick up third in class for 181.

Installed stainless top hinge/mirror mounts on my '74. The original mirror mounts were rusted out.
Car not on the road yet. Making a little progress though... _________________ Mike B.

Picked up a "Best in Class" for 181 at the Bremerton Bug Nationals on Sunday. Really helps when you're the ONLY 181 in class
